yes money should be the main currency but it will never happen.
there needs to be more to do with money, gambling for items is ok,
but wheres the loose woman, alcohol, gambling, betting on fights, buying your way to something or somewhere, paying to get your items imbued/socketed/personalized, upgrades to and for weapons and armor, corrupt officals who take bribes, trading gold for EXP? (yes i have put all of those things in the master list)
i hate the fact the only thing i ever seem to do with my gold is lose it when i die, because i have so much my stash cant take it all, ressurecting hireables, repairing items, there has to be a better use for my thousands of excess gold.

I couldn't agree with you more, mate. I do hope they find a better use for gold. Also, I am unsure if they should make an item that would be use as an alternative currency (SOJs for example).
Indeed, it was great if you had them. But to those that never had them, trading was a terrible nightmare.
there could even be an implemented tax in certain regions...evrytime u traded items The combined total of gold of the items u trade is mulitplied by a 7% tax in which gold gets taken from youre stash.
just a thought haha
i to hope there is also betting in the game on duels and fights
possibly implement a bribe feature like elfen said.. Every NPC has a like/dislike % of u and by talking to them it can go up/down depending on your'e responses or u can bribe them to get info or quest's
diablo3 will probably have mounts i.e like horses. U could buy a horse for transportation
another cool thing with gold would be that u could purchase a stash or even a house later in the game when u are rich enough to store your'e goods and items.
5 k gold for the 4 inital potions u can hold...15k gold for your backpack/inventory 50 k gold for a small stash
100 k gold for a meduim stash
250 k gold for a large stash.
350 k gold for a horse (which for an additional 50 k gold u can add sadle bags onto him to make him a walking stash)
1 million gold for a house
also if there are mounts/horses u should be able to steal others..SOmthin like u can only have 1 horse at a time (2 if u own a house) and of cource implement mounted fighting (fighting from horseback) but if you get knoccked off and someone hostiles u they can steal your'e horse. the horse also gains experiance and levals up in speed/ jump/ attack/defence (yes horses can be killed)
and a cool feature called retreat that if your horse is close to death and u are not on it it can run away.
That way people would have a reason to steal horses...if they were really high leval'd horses they would be priceless
There should also be a thief type char in game who excels in stealing items. From players stash's and backpacks...What u get is random and cost tons of gold to use the skill 1 time. INstead of the thief skill draining mana it would take like 50 k gold... and u could get an enigma or a pot it would be randomd to whatever they have in their..
In times of chaos thiefs thrive thats a known fact.
Im not too keen on buying houses, its seems to fablish, buying a house doesnt seem to part of the ultimate goal of defeating evil.

as i was thinking not along the lines of an actual house....not one u could see or enter as this would prove to be way to big for everyone to own a house...just somthing like a hey on ur keyboard u could hit where it brings up a massive storage chest and calls it ur House
why not just have an inventory like neverwinter nights, its divided into 5 pages and each one is about 2/3 the size of the d2 inventory?

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
I do believe gold should be of much more importance but it simply cant compare to the value of very rare items. The trading systems in d2 developed the way they did for a reason.
I like the idea of much smaller amounts of gold being dropped from any monster including elite uniques and keeping fairly similar repair and item costs and lowering greatly the sell values of some items as that alone would greatly increase the value of gold.
However I think in the end the very rich players of d3 will havto resort to valuble item trades at least to some extent
I agree with Silvanoesti, Very rare and powerful items should be more important that gold in the time of the sin war. And, yes gold should be dropped less, it would also bring a new challenge in the game, for it is now who has the most money, but survival on the money you have.

Those before me shall quiver in my wake as I unleash the fury within!
should be just as in WoW, i think. drop in small amounts (maybe divided in copper/silver just as in WoW) and used for all kinds of things. From repairing (i really like it that i dont loose xp when i die in WoW - only gold) to clearing the skill tree (everyone had some characters ruined cause of a few misplaced skillpoint). The merchants should also have some usefull stuff to sell (it shouldnt be too multiplayer oriented if we dont want it as a MMO).
Gold should definately have some meaningful use other than gambling, which isn't worthwile anymore anyway.
I would very much like to see gold being used for something else, but as Elfen Lied said, bying a house doesn't really seem to fit in with defeating evil. However, maybe a castle or something could be bought by a guild/clan. Huge amounts would be necessary, maybe something like 100 million (with reduced gold drops) for the biggest ones. They could after purchase be upgraded with extra towers, arrow slits, gates, guards and whatever seems reasonable. And when bying the castle, it also becomes the target of occasional demon attacks, or even better, raids by players from the opposing faction.
Now this, if implemented, will create waves upon waves of complaints when poweful guilds raid other fortresses and steal them. But that could perhaps be minimized through some sort of refunding if the fort is lost.
This was just something I came up with to justify bying castles. I really like the idea of having some form of housing, but if it doesn't fit in with the world, leave it out.
But stealing items from players I am totally and completely opposed to. If I finally managed to find that one unique item I've been striving for, I don't want some lvl 100 thief taking it!
Arena fights would be great. Especially if it was carried out by real players. Yes, scamming would most certainly take place with premade games, but I'm sure measures could be taken to minimize the risk.
but wheres the loose woman, alcohol, gambling, betting on fights, buying your way to something or somewhere, paying to get your items imbued/socketed/personalized, upgrades to and for weapons and armor, corrupt officals who take bribes, trading gold for EXP? Paying to get your weapons socketed and personalized, just perfect. Why wasn't that done in D2?
So adding it all together, yes, gold should definately have a more important role.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Need to make gold in d3 very hard to get compared to d2. I want it to actually be a currency. Trash drop a few gold.. bosses more, and always have auto split on for when people pick it up. =P

welp just some thoughs on how to use gold in d3
But seriously gold should have value like in WoW. It shouldent be just, 'Oh i need 100000000 gold, so let me go deul for 2 minutes.
