A lot of people have been going around complaining about the Diablo 3 art style far past the lighting conditions, saying that it's too much like WoW and that Diablo 3 shouldn't be in any way like that 'insult rambling insult against WoW that makes no sense here'. Now, this will probably be the one post I made on this subject where I don't openly insult the people trying to play these opinions, but rather attempt to make them see exactly how... ludicrous their position is in regard to the game itself.
You see, Diablo 3 is being made by Blizzard Entertainment, a company which has a proven history of excellence in their products. Now, when you have a single gaming studio that makes games, there's a high chance you're going to see a degree of overlap in the art styles employed, as more than likely they are being designed by the same people. So how does this affect Diablo 3? Well, the point to it affecting Diablo 3 is that Blizzard Entertainment also made another massively popular game, called World of WarCraft. This game brought in a lot of people and has given Blizzard the resources through its continued sale and success to really put the effort they want to into their own games. The art of Diablo 3 is being influenced thusly, as Blizzard has a sort of art style going into things now that is generally reflecting what came before.
Now, there's also the matter where people may contest as to why Blizzard cannot make Diablo 3 in the same style as Diablo 1 and 2. The quickest and most apt answer is that it might be because Diablo 1 and 2 were not made by Blizzard. They were made at the now-defunct Blizzard North studio, most of whom broke away from Blizzard entirely when the studio was assimilated back into the main HQ and went on to form Flagship Studios, the company that made the floppish title, Hellgate: London. So this means that not only do you have a different set of people working on the game, but the people that originally made the first two games(and even the division from which they hail) no longer exist. So, I've come to the point where I will use previously posted evidence to support my point as to how and why the art style currently is.
First comes a comparison between Diablo 3 and World of WarCraft. People have been saying that Diablo 3 is exactly like World of WarCraft, and that the graphics are both equally cartoony. My evidence to counter this statement is some of the same evidence ironically used to back up the argument. Between the two images, that of a female Barbarian and a male Orc Warrior from World of WarCraft, you will notice the difference in the saturation of color and the effect of 'grain' upon each model. While the Orc is given a vivid vibrancy, the Barbarian is rather dulled down, brought more to a reasonably level rather than holding the same sort of 'technicolor explosion' vibe. Furthermore the Barbarian is more detailed than the Orc, both physically and in the design of the armor and weapons, which shows they were going for a more mature policy of design using what resources they had.
Now, there's also the point where people may wish to use these two images to say that Blizzard is blatantly copying armor designs. I will now counter this accusation. Spikes on armor is not a new concept, and big shoulderpads are not either. On the contrary, the concept of bulky armor has for a great deal of time been known as a method to increase the intimidation factor that a figure portrays. It artificially elevates the appearance of their posture in a way commonly used in nature by certain species of animal to bluff their way out of a confrontation. So the idea is hardly even something originally thought up by Blizzard. As to the similarity to the armor designs, it /does/ make sense that they would bring over their old concepts and rework them for the new game. Yet take note that the Barbarian's armor is far more detailed, and far better designed than that of the World of WarCraft Orc. Where one seems to be novelty armor, the other looks as though it is a realistic piece of combat gear from the more mature and more dark-inclined genre of which Diablo is a part of.
Now, to address the environments, I'd like to make a few things clear. If you design everything to be dark, you'll have trouble pressing in that something in particular is /especially/ dark. If you make everything gloomy, gory, or depressing, you'll have trouble pressing in the idea that something in particular of /especially/ gloomy, gory, or depressing. That said, the artistic design seen in the Diablo 3 trailers is most definitely not the position taken for the entire game. It was most likely simply a demo environment put together to give a general idea of how the game would work. In other areas of the game we haven't even begun to see, I'm sure there is a wider variety of darker, as well as lighter areas. Diablo 3 is a game that wishes to pull us through the highest peaks of the Heavens and into the darkest bowls of the flaming Hells. Before you demand the game be brought down, take that into consideration. Also take into consideration that horror and atrocity become meaningless within an environment horrible and atrocious.

Blizzard Norh didnt went only to Flagship studios, there's 2 more studios that they went to.
No one said D3 is equally cartoonish as WoW, we say it has big influences from that game.
Well....we all know what arguing on the internet is like...so shh
Blizzard Norh didnt went only to Flagship studios, there's 2 more studios that they went to.
No one said D3 is equally cartoonish as WoW, we say it has big influences from that game.
And Yoshida saying he cant see any female barbarian is what proves exactly my point, that picture is a female barbarian, should females use that kind of armors? No, they need more feminine armors like they used in D2.
So you mean they should look like oversexualized whores? Are you trying to be sexist or is it just inherent?
Once again, youre putting words on our mouths, they need a more feminine, not so heavy and not so exaggerated armor, something that lets you say it is a woman that's wearing it.
Mr.Yoshida is the perfect example of what im talking about, he thought that was a male barbarian, that is the most innocent and 1st sight comment you shall get and it clearly proves what im saying.
I believe he was having an issue with the image not appearing, hence why I changed the hosting for it. Not sure he meant more than that by his statement.

And I'm sure 'feminine armors' as you put it will exist in the game.
But why should they be worn by Barbarians? The barbarian, male or female, is all about brute force and sheer strength. You'd expect them to wear gigantic pauldrons and wield oversized swords. It's who they are and what defines them as Barbarians.
Why don't you go and start a petition about wanting to make the female Barbarian into an assassin instead?
Correct. Currently there are about 14.1 thousand signatures and counting. If the game would sell for $50, then Blizzard would be out over $705,000 if they didn't take our concerns into consideration.
Right. As if you 14,000~ whiners aren't going to buy the game anyway, over some stupid detail that only you care about.

No I couldn't see the female Barbarian because the image wasn't loading when I commented.
I said "potentially." Can we please be civil about this?
As far as most people should be concerned, civility went right out the window when you guys started that disrespectful petition against Blizzard, despite all of their hard work and effort to make Diablo 3 possible after so many years of thankless development.
He meant it and you know he meant it, it's hard to notice that that barbarian is a female, anyone can see this.
...how in the Seven Hells is it hard to notice the Barbarian is female? Assumption seems to be your trademark lately. Like assuming that the demo trailer of Diablo 3 is what the entire game will be like and starting a petition around it. Assumption is really a bad habit to get into, as it has a habit of blowing up in your face.
Listen, if blizzard, at a later date adds shaders to the characters, armor, and swords; which by the way is quite possible, you are going to be commenting on how cool and realistic the materials and skin look.
I think that a ton of people are misjudging the style because the materials in the game right now lack any real world qualities. This is due to the fact that there are no shaders in the game.
Ultramegazord, you seriously need to get your damn ego in check. You aren't going to be some 'legendary fanhero of Blizzard legend'. You're going to be an assuming prick who goes down as having pissed a lot of people off.
The game hasn't even been shown past a /demo/. It's good that the community is voicing their opinion, but the opinion is that Blizzard shouldn't be making the game.

How is it disrespectful? People are just voicing their opinion! Thats not disrespectful! Its what people- O my gosh... disrespectful because people dont like something? *counts down from 10 to 1 slowly* Its just an opinion. Thankles development? Oh ya.. thanks blizzard for making this game so you can make tons of money. Its not a gift to us or anything they want money. Ya its cool they are making diablo 3 but we dont have to thank them for it. How... how did civility go out the window because people wanted something changed? This is just an excuse your useing to insult people just because they want an art direction changed...
Thankless development? THERE GONNA GET MILLIONS WHEN ITS RELEASED! Thats a pretty good thank you...
You know, I had to do a double take when I saw that petition to "change Diablo 3's art direction". I could not believe my god damn eyes at the sheer AUDACITY of it.
I mean, hell, I've been waiting for D3 for 8 years. Most of us even thought they'd abandoned Diablo. And here they are, announcing D3, which is like the best game ever.
And some of you bastards go and whine about it. Not just whine about it -- that's fine. No, you had to go and make this huge petition to show the world what a big whiner you are. Holy shit! That just blows my mind.

I just created the petition, the other 14229 more persons are as legendary fanhero of blizzard legend as me because they're the true fans, the ones who want Blizzard games to be the better as possible.
Yes, and those 14,229 people are essentially saying that Blizzard shouldn't be making the game with their merged complaints. They want D1 and D2. They're not going to get D1 and D2 in Diablo 3, as it's a completely different dev team and design philosophy.
You want the right to complain? Try being a Fallout fan.
Once again and for the 3rd time, your putting words in our mouths, we're saying we want some changes in the game, stop putting words in the mouths of others, you've been doing it all the time.
You want them to make Diablo 3 in the style of the Witcher. You want Blizzard to make a game that isn't in the style of a Blizzard game. I'm really not putting words into anyone's mouth.

another example about how people resort to swearing just because someone else has a different opinion.

Quite true. A demo doesn't stand for everything that will make up a game.
