They could have simply also not had the available art talent to continue in the Gothic style after the artists working for the North left.
The one thing blizzard is not lacking is artistic talent. Blizzard's cinematics are second to none in the world. You cannot find game trailers with as much detail as Blizzard puts in, you can hardly find movie trailers with as much detail.
"Gothic" style as you put it seems to pretty much mean dark, no saturation and flat. Thats not what I want a game to look like in this day and age. Dungeons should be dark but the outside should not be. The evils have been gone for 20 years, the world is rebuilding itself. So far we know nothing of the rest of the story and the rest of the areas. The world at this point has no reason to be dark.
"Cartoony" does not have a set definition, just like cartoons have no set art style. You can call anything cartoony for whatever reason.
I do agree that the games palette needs to be a bit less saturated and a bit darker, but thats not a game breaking issue since graphics do not affect the gameplay and I enjoyed the graphics in the gameplay trailer enough that I can live with them if it was to be like that during live.

The Internet has become flooded with morons and idiots who think they are being profound in accepting less than the very best for a game THAT WE ULTIMATELY PAY FOR.
Indeed, Rotan made me LAUGHHH.
Then again I realize I'm on a forum composed of mostly middle school children who are viewing this as a Christmas present rather then what it is. And that's a company looking for a profit who just happens to be developing a sequel to one of the best selling games of all time.
If Diablo 3 doesn't please the consumer 100%, Blizzard might as well pack up their bags and leave. Blizzard so far hasn't created a game that was lesser then it's predecessor, I am not going to sit back and simply be happy that I'm getting Diablo 3, I'm going to complain about what I don't like about it since this is a business deal and not my birthday. If this game was being made by anyone else but Blizzard I wouldn't give this game another thought, but this is Blizzard, this is Diablo 3. It must be perfect, it must be exactly what we the consumers want. Blizzards name will be tarnished if they don't deliver.

It's not a finished product - this is what you people can't get through your heads. As they stated on their website about the release:
It's too early to estimate Diablo III's release date. As with all Blizzard Entertainment games, our goal is to create a game that is as fun, balanced, and polished as possible. We intend to take as much time developing Diablo III as is necessary to ensure the game meets our own high expectations and those of our players.
Everything isn't going to be changed overnight because some of you feel it's too Wowish - get real. The game is being developed for a profit - no shit - but there wouldn't be a profit if it wasn't doing it's job of entertaining us. I for one am entertained at just the thought that my favorite series of all time is coming out in the near future. When has Blizzard ever let us down on one of it's games? Everyone that I've played I've enjoyed - I played all but WoW since it wasn't my thing.
So instead of being happy that Blizzard has finally admitted it's being developed - you are complaining about minor details in the game that I'm sure they will work on. It's not polished and perfected yet - give them a break. At least they take the time to make their games perfect instead rushing out their games like most the games companies do. By doing that they ensure that their "business deal" is the most profitable on their end and their customers are happy thus letting "middle school children" and adults like me to enjoy our "Christmas present".
Being with a stick stuffed up your ass and too worried about the business aspects of a GAME - you my friend are the one making me laugh. If you are so worried about a finished product on a business aspect then spend your money on something more serious like a car or a home instead of playing politics over a video game. Diablo 3 will be perfect if you like they way they did it or not - you think they care about losing your $50 - HA!

Epic post. I'll eat some more cake in your honor.
