... or am I making it more complex than it should be?
I recently turned 60 and entered Inferno, and so am still getting used to the idea of 6 active keys for WW, each with its own timer. Up to this point, I was strictly Frenzy/Rend. I'd stomp once in a while, I'd wrath now and again, and if I were really up against it, I'd earthquake.
So, the Whirwind build takes some getting used to. Let me make sure I'm doing it right: As long as I have fury from previous fights, I tap Impunity to make sure my resists are up in advance of the fight. As soon as I see the next group, I tap Battle Rage to start building fury as fast as possible. I try to engage the group of mobs along its edge to get my fury to 100. Once I've got it there, I tap Whirlwind and Sprint, and start running in circles around and through the mobs. If the group looks complex or particularly difficult, I tap Chaos. From then on, I'm spamming Sprint. I hope that everything is dead before any other buffs run out, because I can't watch those timers and watch what I'm hitting at the same time (lol). If for any reason, I run out of fury, I start all over ... or die.
The post-1.04 discussions about set-it-and-forget-it builds using rend, have got me thinking ...
Sounds like you have the basics down. If you are running out of fury, you might need to raise your crit hit chance. What is that at? Bash with the rune for extra fury helps for a hit or two to gain enough fury to get sprint up again. You can also start a fight off with spring and no WW. Just the tornadoes from sprint will fill your fury really fast without WW at all.
1. keep warcry and battle rage up at all times. What I do is warcry first to generate the 30 fury, and battle rage costs 20 fury only. Tada.
2. If you have enough fury, start sprint and run around the mobs to start your fury generation. If not enough fury, hit a mob with a bash+instigation. This should generate enough fury to start your sprint.
3. Once you are comfortable with fury generation, you can start whirlwind around mobs. If fury runs out for for whatever reason, you can bash again to get some fury back.
Keep in mind that sprint should be your main damage skill, while ww only if you have excess fury (at max usually). Pop wotb for unique packs or whatever.
I use frenzy for the life steal, albeit after the kill. In the profiles I've seen, I don't see much emphasis on life steal, and not everyone has enough LoH, and those that do average about 1000. How to stay alive?
The tornado ticks with LOH forms the majority of your life leech. Life steal is for barbs which have high enough dps. 1000-1500 LOH should be sufficient

Sounds like my 950 LoH and 2.2% Life Steal at 51K DPS (=1,100 Life per sec) should be enough?
I started at 500 LoH 30% crit with 25k dps and worked my way up so im sure you'll be fine. However I did use the bloodthirst passive and I have a life steal belt so that helped. When your loh gets higher you can drop bloodthirst for something of your liking, I prefer superstition so I can stand in shit longer and keep pew pewing with the passive fury gain
