View Full Version : Power Metal - Why Hate?

Chaosdragon94

I notice a lot of hate on Power Metal from guys who are into the more hardcore, dark metal. What's the reasoning? My guess is either the keyboards and/or high vocals. Anything else?

Post here if you like Power Metal too :P my favorite Power Metal band is DragonForce, but besides that, it would have to be Blind Guardian.

Lol, it's just kinda cheesy. I used to like some of it, but then the majority of it just started to sound like the same thing in a loop. Plus, everyone at my school is like "zomgz, DragonForce's guitarist is soooo good!!!111one11!!11!!". When lets be realistic, any technical or avant-garde guitarist could wipe the floor.

I find Power Metal to be the most unique genre.

Cheesy? Yes and no. Rhapsody of Fire is cheesy, DragonForce is not, although they use to be. Their lyrics are now not really fantasy but life related, surprisingly.

As for Herman Li, he's amazing, although I wish he could do his solos live the same as studio. With enough practice, he could do it, but it's most likely quite hard when he says it's stuff he creates on the spot that he can't exactly recreate on stage (while, again, he probably could with lots of practice). As for a better guitarist then him? I'm not one to judge, although by the looks of it, I haven't seen one better skill wise. As for all those kids at your school, yes it's annoying, but it doesn't help shape my opinion of the guitarist/band/genre.

I could give you a litany of better guitarists, lol.By better I mean skill not at composing songs. Although I prefer Herman Li's compositions over most I hear anyways.

Anywho, give me this litany of better guitarists. I'll YouTube them.

Also, I edited my second post about the kids at your school saying how awesome Herman Li is. Make sure you read that.

P.S. - Corrected myself on my second post... it's not Rhapsody, yet it's Rhapsody of Fire. :P

Muhammed Suicmez and Sami Raatikainen of Necrophagist.

Colin Marston of Behold... The Arctopus.

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta.

Christopher Arp of Psyopus. (Although, that might be to insane.)

Buckethead.

Cristopher Bradly of Beneath the Massacre.

I gotta go to school, so I'll give more later if you want, lol.

Didn't like the music style (although that's more less irrelevant), nor did it look or sound like anything Herman Li couldn't do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xjUQw2yQnQ - Herman Li solo in studio.

The only one I know of which that you listed is Buckethead. He's quite amazing, but again, I'm not one to say if he's better than Herman Li or not.

I don't like it since it doesn't fit my musical taste
Yeah, and I do like it because it does fit my musical taste :P

Hmm, I guess I'm different than most of you guys in that I listen to pretty much everything. I can't stand listening to the same stuff over and over, I would just get sick of it. But since I listen to basically every type of music out there (except classical: it's beautiful but my attention span isn't long enough) I don't have to really care about the fact that alot of a certain genre sounds the same. If I'm sick of it, I'll just listen to some other genre for a while.
Now, back in the day I used to listen to all the famous stuff, when someone recommended me some power metal. I listened to it, and I liked it alot. Because it was different, it was new. So to me it seems strange to say that power metal is basically all the same, because to me it was the different kind of thing I was looking for.

Still, that's not to say power metal is my favorite genre or anything... I comes close, but I think I like hard rock best.

First off, Dragonforce aren't Power Metal, they're Nintendocore. I'm not even joking.

Power Metal, if done correctly, is completely fine, but isn't for all tastes. Blind Guardian do it perfectly, and so do few other bands (the stress being on "Few"). It's just because it's associated with being "girlish" because of all the high pitches and general faggotry of a lot of Power Metal band members. There was a picture of this Finnish Power Metal singer who looked completely like a girl, but I can't seem to find it.

Don't insult nintendocore! Don't bundle this charade of a band with HORSE the Band and old iamerror.

You said DragonForce was nintendocore, I've never heard a song of theirs with a break down, lol.

-Mephisto's Lament-

How is that "insulting" it? Break down? They're Nintendocore because now they basically embody video game music. Have you seen the cover of their last album? Look them up.

Lestater

Nintendocore, is sub group of electronicore. Electronicore is pretty much metal core with techno and Nintendocore is essentially the same thing as electronicore but the keyboardist uses an 8-bit soundboard. DragonForce is not metalcore and there keyboardist does not use an 8-bit soundboard (as gay as they may sound, lol).

This is nintendocore:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZEIozl5Dks (don't mind the weird ass music video)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=am-B71jww9o&annotation_id=annotation_98647&feature=iv

Come to think of it both of those videos are really weird..

But yeah, that's nintendocore, not DragonForce.

Chaosdragon94
03-24-2009, 05:41 PM
If DragonForce was nintendcore, most likely people would be labelling them as nintendocore including themselves ;) DragonForce are Power Metal, or Epic Power Metal as they like to call themselves :P

As for DragonForce having breakdowns, their latest album features them in pretty much every song I believe. Before this album, I don't think they even had one :P

It's usually were the tempo is dramatically slowed down and everything but the percussion is taken out of the segment. It came from hardcore/punk and made it's way into metalcore.

Tempo dramatically decreases, and they keep vocals and keyboards or vocals and drums, or drums and keyboards, etc. Good enough for me.

Lestater

Lol, it's not a break down, it's simply a break. Most songs have breaks, where it slows down. You would probably have to be a part of the hardcore (hate this word) "scene" to know what is and what isn't a breakdown.

DragonForce is not nintendocore and they do not have breakdowns, lol.

I think power metal is a great genre featuring really cool melodies and solos my favourite power metal bands are -
Stratovarius
Symphony X (these guys are a bit prog oriented also)
iced earth
Dragonforce
Angra
Gamma Ray

-Mephisto's Lament-

Symphony X aren't Power Metal.

True, but most people who like Power Metal would probably like Symphony X so it's not completely out of place for him to mention them lol.

Here's some really cool Power Metal bands:

Altaria
Angra
Avantasia
Axxis
Dionysus
Dream Evil
Elvenking (mostly Folk Metal, some Power Metal influences)
Gamma Ray (listen to some album samples because live it's bad quality)
HammerFall
Helloween
Kamelot (great live band)
Sabaton
Silent Force
Sinergy
Sonata Arctica (my favorite ;])
Stratovarius

Yes it is. Just because a lot of My Chemical Romance loving posers like Metallica, doesn't mean they have the right to label Metallica as Emocore or any of that nonsense. Same applies here. Symphony X are Prog, not Power.

Symphony X are'nt exactly power metal its just that they take a quite a few clues from it!!!!
Also as such Dream Theater are prog but then they also have some elements of hard rock/blues/acoustic music/shred!!

Listen to these songs for a good variety-

Erotomania (instrumental)
Silent man (acoustic)
In the presence of enemies part 1 (prog/shred/metal)
Forsaken (goth/prog/metal)

and many more like this.....!!!
We cant just very narrowly confine power metal bands or any other band as such that's what i wanna say!

Ivaron

Yeah yeah I know them, it's what I said isn't it? If we can list every band that takes ideas from power metal than my list would be alot longer.... Actually my list IS alot longer, those are just the best/most easy to get into.

Can you please stop saying wrong things about Metal? Please. Do you even know what Prog is to proceed and say that "they take quite a few clues from it" ? Next thing you're gonna tell me is that Wintersun and Arcturus can be called Power Metal because they have some pseudo-choir choruses, fast paced guitar and keyboards. Seriously, quit it.

How are you labeling stuff as Prog/Shred/Metal/Goth and whatnot ? Since when is Prog not Metal. If you meant Prog rock, then I don't know many, if any, bands who go Prog, then Metal, then Gothic Rock (I'm losing you readers here, because the post I'm replying to is too obscure to handle). I take it you're talking about Gothic Rock maybe? Again, doesn't fit.

Don't get so upset over this. Music genres cross so many borders with each other that it's often impossible to label bands and songs. Dream Theater is the perfect example because they dip into so many different genres it's hard to count.

Speaking of Dream Theater, to the OP who keeps raving about Herman Li... the guy can't perform live at all. He can play a hell of a lot faster than I ever will, but why write songs that you can only play correctly in studio conditions after hundreds of takes? John Petrucci from Dream Theater can play just as fast as Herman Li, but he doesn't f**k up every time they play live. In fact, Dream Theater oftentimes sound better live than in the studio. I think a person's live performance is the best way to say how good they are.

Don't get me wrong, Dragonforce has a lot of really cool songs, but if I had to watch them live I'd shove pencils in my ears first so I wouldn't have to feel so bad for Herman Li.

I'm not getting upset, musical ignorance just annoys me. I'm not talking about crossing boarders, I'm talking about another concept. I don't even care about Dream Theater to discuss the example with you, since they don't appeal to me one bit.

Well, there are some bands that follow a straight line in some typical genre. But I have to say that there are allot of bands that cross borders and are quite inventive. I tend to listen to allot of different kind of music that is beeing labeled in the excact same genre of something else but is completely different in my mind.

- Red Sparrows
- Hypnos 69
- Motorpsycho
- Neurosis
- Grails
- Colour haze

Mind breaking and sky scraping music, that fits into one "kind of genre" but then again is completly different. Nothing to do with Power metal though :offtopic:
