OKay, so I actually sat down and watched the VMA's this year (only because Paramore was performing live) and I have to say that Americas "main stream" music preference is not on my playlist. After Brittany Spears walked away with three moonmen, I have to say I've given up hope in any real music taste now adays ( sorry Brittany Spear fans, or any other music bands I made references to, just my opinion, please don't take offense)

So anyways, for those who watched it, what are your thoughts about the VMA's???

I've not watched any award show for years. What's best is what I say is best.

wat is a vmaIt means music video awards. It's a show MTV does every year where all the whores and hacks come out to shine. And then teenagers watch it and actually discuss it the next day at school.

You basically described today's problem with music on a whole with that paragraph. The problem with our music is:

1) Sex Sells Music, despite performance.
2) Those who succeeded with 1) are featured too often on all types of media, keeping the "hype" up.
3) The same group also lives from scandals. I don't want to see Brittney's snatch, nor do I wanna hear about how someone beat up the papparazi. This carries back to number 2, being featured on the media.
4) Teenagers become obsessed with those people. They will grow up to attempt point 5.
5) Desperate people immitate those that fill up the categories above. We now have a cycle of failure
6) America's Idol didn't help too much either. Whenever its a vote, its more of a popularity contest, not a contest of talent.

That's the Sex, Scandals and Popularity section. But we also have these problems:

7) Radiostations play 99% crap music, then proceed to play it every 15 minutes.
8) When a good song is played on the radio, it fails anyway because it is plaed every 15 minutes. Enough already...
9) Along with point 7, the networks encourage crappy musicians to produce more generic crap for that "one time sucess".
10) When someone does a song a certain way and its generally percieved as good, you will have 10 musicians doing it the same way within short time.
11) Once the radiostations notice they overplayed a song, they will opt to go for the remix of the same song.

So its not hard to see that when a group or person really does posses an artistic gift in music, they are drowned in other people's crap. Its hard to become successful when you get no mention in the media and Brittney gets 5 pages on why her life broke apart. Once you have produce a good song, you"re hardly ever going to get into the network, since they're so restricted to what they're already playing.

That's the reason I can't go and buy CDs from a store. You won't often find what you're looking for, while some person's twelth CD in two years is stacked to the roof in a store. Thank god for internet, at least Google won't give me "Did you mean Brittney?" when I look for MacLethal's new songs or such.
