My first Hardcore Witch Doctor will be a melee one. Those are the only skills she will be using. She will only be using gear that she finds or creates. The goal is to see how far she can go before hitting the bucket. All areas must be done. I have not decided yet if I will allow re-running of areas or not. I will decide when I create her. Yes I only have a few skills since I do not want any skills that does skill damage. The only damage will be from my melee attacks. She will be very difficult to play but I think I will have a lot of fun with her. Her life leach should be fine and I can use Spirit Walk to help escape as well as Horrify. I just have to decide on whether to go with a 2-handed weapon if possible or weapon and shield. I do not have to worry about Mana.
I think the only way she will make it if have a lot of gold find and to use the Mystic to make my gear better. I think I will be only using magic (blue) self crafted gear and items that are from the Artisans. I can use gems but no other dropped items unless it is used to craft items. If an item slot is not able to be crafted than I can use a dropped magic one.
I think I will call her NotAllThere.

Wow, good luck with that build, I think you're gonna need it.
Technically speaking, Firebats, Zombie Charger and Zombie Wall are "melee-ish", if you're refering to range when speaking of melee. Now if you're speaking of using auto-attacks, that's a different story, and I get why you don't want any of those "attacking spells".
Pierce the Veil might be interesting with only 1 spell that costs mana too. It could replace Blood Ritual.
Big Bad Voodoo also could be melee-ish, and it increases your attackspeed by quite a lot. Maybe you could add that.
I would throw in Big Bad Voodoo and hex as well. Neither do damage both increase your damage and Hex increases your survivability. Hex should be an Alabaster (in my opinion) and Big Bad Voodoo should be Crimson, Indigo, or Obsidian. Unless you really want to restrict yourself to the 3 skills.
Good luck in any case

If that made sense to you, Bravo! I think I even confused myself...
What's the point of Vision Quest? There's only two spells that cost mana, both with a CD, so I don't think the extra mana regen there will be useful at all. I'd take Blood Ritual for the life regen instead.
Anyway, I don't see the amusement in purposefully limiting yourself to nothing but auto-attack throughout the entire game, but to each his own I suppose...good luck!
Vision Quest is kind of wasted if you have no skill that drains mana quickly.
I think I will go with just the normal auto attack and no other skills including passives.
The fun is in the challenge and also no one believes it can be done. I do not know how far I can go but I still be able to equip a lot of items and should still be fine. The only issue will be in dealing with mobs.

I get that, but there are plenty of ways to handicap yourself or make weird, challenging builds that are less...boring than nothing but auto-attack. Why not limit yourself to all Golden (or any other) Runes? Or only rank 1 Runes? Or maybe something like only using skills that cost no mana?
I dunno...maybe auto-attack is fun in your opinion, but if it's just extra challenge that you're after, it seems like there are more exciting ways to get it done. /shrug

If that's the case you won't make it past nightmare lol. And if you don't use any skills it will get very boring very fast!
I think this or a variation of these skills will be the only way you will survive being a melee WD
