So, the thing thats all the rage right now in the community is BIG DAMAGE WEAPONS!
Well, I don't really care about my damage. I think I'd be fine doing 0 damage, just so long as it kept things pissed at me.
I'm trying to figure out if its worth it for me to buy a stat stick, where my weapon has 200 vitality/200 dex/50 to all resist, does 130 dps, vs my current 900 dps 1h with crappy stats.
So what things does my damage affect? Obv, it affects my sweeping wind and crippling wave. What about my heal? My shield? My mantra of healing? If it doesn't affect these, why do I care about my weapon as anything more than another source for stats?
**ninja edit** (I'm a 60 monk, doing inferno act 2 & 3, with about 950 resists w/ self-buff. I'm running with friends, doing group runs for neph stacks and then clearing bosses)
You care about your weapon because of enrage timers. Can't rely on your group to cover your slack: you need to be contributing DPS. It really isn't like WoW at all.
In answer to your other question (what does weapon DPS affect): anything that does damage. Heals only scale with your level, or maybe with your max HP. Turn on advanced tooltips and double check, it'll say what it's scaling with in there.
But yeah. You need a high DPS weapon. Don't think like WoW!

Thus: it affects only my damage, and you need to have a high dps weapon, so that you can do dps....
Yeah, so in other words, as a MonkTANK, since I'm running with 3 RL friends all the time who are doing ridiculous DPS, theres no need for a high damage weapon?
You'll want a fast weapon over a high DPS weapon in that case, then you can provide your spirit regeneration through attacks rather then through runes and can go purely support. If I were you i'd go with a low dps weapon with high stats, life on hit, and +%Attack speed. If you are really lucky you'll find a weapon like mine with a good amount of life on spirit spent (more then the passive) and can just spam your mantra's 3 seconds for self heal and 100% uptime while whaling away at things.
Also considering that even with 4 men in the server if at least two of them have damage (WD,DH,Wiz) you won't be hitting any enrage timers any time soon if you keep the enemies on you (thus they can stack DPS), i'd say go for it.
I managed to find a sweet spot for myself where I can do both at once, but even then I keep a seperate set of gear for group runs that gives me more survivability and less DPS (duel weilding life on spirit spent weapons with life on hit rings and lots of mitigation, I don't worry about Vit, my heals are useless with stacked vit).
*Edit*
Oh and in response to the guys saying you have to carry your own weight in the DPS department. Considering that the highest monk DPS i've seen so far is around 1/4 of the highest WIZ/DH DPS I wouldn't worry about it at all

Assuming your friends can do enough DPS to cover your deficit, then you're absolutely right. It's also worth bearing in mind that there isn't really aggro in this game, like in WoW: the mobs will just go for whoever they like. Usually that means whoever is closest, so luckily that means Melee are able to Tank sufficiently without needing to do high DPS.
So yeah: you could go full support/tank, assuming your friends are able to do enough DPS. Weapon DPS does nothing for heals or support abilities unless it explicitly states weapon DPS is a factor in the advanced tooltip.
So you have Recount installed to show you the DPS people are doing? Tell me more.
@OP: Damage is always a multiple of your weapon DPS (excluding +dmg rings/amulets). Thus it'd make sense to at least try getting a weapon with semi-decent DPS and some good stats. E.g. if you can find a 500 DPS weapon with similar stats to your 200 DPS one, you'd already be doing 2.5 times the damage:)
You realize that there have been multiple (monk builds) threads / streams / players i've met that I can source DPS from correct? As well as from a strictly theoretical standpoint monks just don't have the muster when compared to the true DPS classes.
Also I'm quite sure he realizes that higher dps is better if it is available, however for his case and intended purpose, the lower dps weapon with the higher stats should be more highly valued.
Chances are, a higher ilvl wep with higher damage will have better(More) stats than your current one
Sometimes.
I guess damage is just more important if you're doing inferno solo..
edit: misread op/responses

Yeah, sure you can separate who's doing the dps on those streams. You're totally not full of it.
Considering that I play a lvl 60 monk in inferno actIII, yes. I can entirely relate the character sheet dps to what they are likely getting during fights considering the available buffs and builds that the class has. I have also gone through the thought process that the OP is going through when playing with a group, where I felt more useful going as far as I can into utility and ignoring dps. I didn't like the playstyle personally but it is probably more effective than what I choose to play like.
