How did you guys feel about the references or lack thereof in Diablo 3 to the previous games? I had some mixed feelings about what was revealed and what wasn't. For example, I thought for sure we'd see the Necromancer in some form in D3. What we did see what a Necromancer, however, in Act 2 who referenced another Necromancer that was his master and taught him everything he knew. I'm pretty sure that master being referenced was supposed to be the one from D2 and that was kind of interesting but i was hoping to see thee D2 Necro himself.
Granted, it's probably kind of tricky to reference what was a playable character in a sequel rather than an NPC. Cause it's not like the Necro would've had an official name or anything. But they did manage to reference him anyway when you meet his apprentice in Act 2. So I would've liked to have seen him in the game and was kind of disappointed over that.
Then the next thing I was really hoping to see was the Assassins in some form or another. Unless there is a sidequest I've not yet discovered that does reference them more, I'm pretty sure they were nowhere to be found in D3. But there were some corrupt mages found throughout D3, especially if you want to count the cultists, even more especially their summoners. Or even with the dead Horadric mage (forgot his name at the moment) who's body parts and blood you're going around collecting in Act 2. During that quest I imagined an Assassin trailing me waiting to see if I might succeed and then either having to fight the Assassin because she wants to stop me from reviving the dead mage or maybe even have the Assassin fight by my side in a much harder boss battle. Maybe I should go back and examine things more closely. Maybe the Assassins were referenced somewhere and I missed it.
I'm....pretty sure there has been no Wirt's Leg. I'm grateful for this.
The Gharbad reference was fun, but I really wished they would've tried to make him sound like the whimpering goatman like he was in D1. I also thought, why have a Gharbad reference if not a Zhar reference.
I think the biggest reference (well it was hardly a mere reference, obviously) I didn't like was the Butcher. I knew all along they wouldn't leave this awesome demon from D1 to rest. And I didn't like the background story they gave him in D3 either and how Cain's journal wiped the previous conjecture clean by stating, "Turns out we were all wrong about the Butcher all along...." In D1 the Overlords were formerly the followers of Inarius. And as Mephisto locked him in the prison of mirrors and mutilated him, so to were all his followers changed into these bloated horned men that we see as the Overlords. And for me, the Butcher was merely one of these Overlords who had a particular fondness for butchering humans. Like, that's all there was to him. An exceptionally sadistic Overlord who moved further up from the depths to be closer to the town and capture and kill more humans. And I loved it that way. And in D3, you can add all the firey effects and make him 20 times the size and give him multiple kinds of attacks and still he wouldn't inspire a fraction of the fear I felt for him in D1. And that sentiment is not just about getting older, I swear. I can still play D1 today and dread the Butcher every time. Now he's just there for farming in D3 and has a more convoluted backstory. Not to mention I just hate the way the butterfly chick Magdha introduces him. Behold....The Butcher! (applause)

The Cow King choked eating Wirt's leg and died. We have since found Wirt's Cow Bell, and can use the Bell to summon the Ghost of the Cow King, who has imbibed Wirt's Leg, so that its power may still be granted to us. It had some side effects, however, like making us see magical homicidal ponies....
yeah, i thought there would be more kicking diablo 2 characters / npc's asses,
like kill corrupt gheed, or that jerk guard in act 2,
maybe slap the @#$#@ out of corrupt amazon.
or as you said it would be cool to see more referenced/ or in game as NPC, like get quests from the paladin, or that act 5 chic.
there's some hall in act 4, I don't remember the name, when you enter your follower (the templar at least) says "the sanctity of this place has been fouled" as the hero in D1 when it entered the cathedral, I liked that
I must agree about the butcher, it wasn't good at all
Well at least I haven't found the reference to Wirt's leg so that's good.
References are tricky I reckon cause we appreciate seeing them but if they just try to reference too many things for the sake of it then you want to accuse them of just trying of trying to tickle your nostalgia bone. Plus, there shouldn't be too many because D3 needs to stand on its own as a game and have its own feel to it.
I must agree about the butcher, it wasn't good at all
I'm glad I'm not the only one. He was just so over the top. As if they knew they had to live up to the legendary status of The Butcher. Instead of him, he could've just been any other demon. Also, he had nothing to do with the story of Act 1 and that's what really disappointed me. Andariel in D2 had everything to do with the story. She was the whole reason you couldn't pursue Diablo into the east and all the corruption she wrought upon the Rogues was being felt and all the characters were talking about it with you and it gave the entire act more of a personal feel and you had more personal motivation I think. Whereas in D3 Maghda is just like, "Oh yeah and here's the Butcher. He'll be your Act 1 boss fight. Enjoy!"
In a lot of parts I got the feeling that blizz was trying to capture the nostalgia part of D1 and D2 but they couldn't make it to the expectations, at least they tried guess
The way in which they brought back the butcher was cheese laden. BEHOLD!
However, the way in which they brought back Izual was almost as cheese. Its too much *shoulder-nudge* *eye-wink* bull.
Remember that guy, guys? Remember? The old lieutenant?!... Look! Its him!
References need to be way way subtle. And not too many - because its like new Blizzard admitting that it has nothing (creativity) on the D2 team.
Oh, there also the Shrine of Rakinishu and the blade of Rakinishu.
I was half expecting to see some dead bloated cows in Act1, that exploded when you clicked on them.
The reference I was most excited about but never found was talked about in the beta. The black mushroom found near Adria's shack only I never found it and I don't know if you can still find it in the full game or not.
I'm sure Blizzard probably held back a lot when wanting to reference things, but the Butcher was just way too in my face. I just knew all along they couldn't leave well enough alone. I mean, I had gotten used to the idea of an Old and New Tristram as well as the Skeleton King. But I thought about the Butcher, there's no justification to bring him back, especially considering his legendary status in D1. Even people who never played D1 knew of the Butcher. So i figured that was gonna be a legacy they wouldn't dare mess with. And there was originally nothing more to the Butcher beyond him just being a sadistic Overlord so it's not like I cared for much explanation to his presence in D3. But he was so hamfisted in there anyway it didn't seem to matter anymore. When Cain's journal then gives you this much more complex explanation of him....
The reference I was most excited about but never found was talked about in the beta. The black mushroom found near Adria's shack only I never found it and I don't know if you can still find it in the full game or not.
I believe you can only find it in the first or second level of the cathedral now

As far as a name is concerned, Aiden was nameless until Diablo 3, no reason no to have named him.
As for the other classes. I'm going to Assume that we will be seeing the Amazon in a expansion, and possible the Necro, since both of there respected area's have already been shown in concept art and cinematic (looking at you D3 announcement cinematic), the one class that I am extremely disappointed in not seeing more of is the Barbarians, you know the ones that guarded arreat summit before it went boom, Wtf happened to them? we get the main hero, and a random vendor and thats it? no other barbs want to try and protect there land and reclaim what they lost?
Also We see a hell of alot of captains in Act 3, Who is the leader of the militia? The Paladin perhaps? maybe we will see him later? As far as the Druid is concerned I'm really hoping he is in the expansion and we get some bad ass corrupted shapeshifters and elementalists.

For the Butcher thing, a popular opinion I've seen around the forums is that Butcher should have been swapped with Skeleton King. You have the majority of Act I focused on Leoric's lore, and end up taking him down very early, then just get the Butcher tossed in there.

The Sorceress was given a name in the Wizard's short story, Isendra. Also, 'not all of them' are alive.

Agreed.. no thought put into bringing back the nostalgia without blatantly throwing it in there. The only cool reference I enjoyed was the Old Tristram road that led to the town. At least it was laid out the way it was in D1. D2's Tristram wasn't even close.
I can't see them bringing back any character classes as references. That just doesn't make any sense.

Though I think they could've done better with anything besides those two, the thing about Leoric is we already delved deep into his story. Practically all of D1 focuses around him and his son. It's partly why I didn't like him in D3 even. His story was thoroughly told and I liked the way it all wrapped up in D1. Not that the undead won't keep coming back anyway. But there was something satisfying about the closure regarding Leoric and his son. Oh except for Aiden now I guess.

Kind of agree there. Especially when we're going through Leoric's manor and torture chambers after we've already killed him.
Also would've matched better to D1 since the Butcher was the first boss type you fought. And I thought the Butcher's fight didn't really capture the original Butcher so well because as a Rogue the scary part of the fight was running like mad through the dungeon trying to hide or dodge away from him because he did massive amounts of damage if he caught up to you, but the fight in D3 is in one fairly small room. Could've redesigned it a bit to bring back memories... although probably make the AI smart enough to open doors this time

classes from D1 were all a reference in D2, Sorcerer was the Summoner of Act 2, Rogue was Blood Raven and warrior, well Diablo
I would also have lover to see what happens to the whole cast of character, Sorceress is dead ;( killed by an assassin (the one of D2 maybe?), we see Necro's student, and sicne Necro isn,t there we can assume he,s dead..., but all of the others are not known, we can guess the barb is dead because of the Worldstone destruction, since most of them died, but druid/Assassin(beside a will wild uncofirrmed guess)/paladin/amazon we got toally no clue, I would have love to know what happened since we learned in D2 what happened with D1 classes...
Personally, I was a big fan of the way the whole Leoric thing got fleshed out (no puns intended here, I know he's a skeleton, har har) - especially in regards to the huge development of Lachdanan, who was - basically - just a minor sub-quest boss from D1, and now has one of most extensive log entries in D3. It's obvious that it was done to further develop Leoric and all that, but I still found it a nice way to do it.
But yeah, I also expect that we'll see much more to the Necromancers in a future expansion, given the major role they have in the general Diablo-setting... And, while I love Kormac, I think he (and many of us) missed the true point of why Jondar "fell". After all, Necromancers aren't evil, they are the keepers of "the balance"...Hmm, maybe I should keep it to that for now, before I start an (even longer) string of theories.

It has been said... that in the end of all things... we would find a new beginning. But as the shadow once again crawls across our world... and the stench of terror drifts on a bitter wind... the people pray for strength and guidance. They should pray for the mercy of a swift death... for I've seen what the darkness hides!
... I don't think it's safe here.
Hoping for Pink Chain Lightning in D3!
