I think comparing D3's loot to D2 loot is an bit "unfair". D2 had an decade of intense twinking in order to reach what it is now... The itemisation is not bad but its not toned either. Imo they only need to fix little things and items wil be perfect:
1. Legendaries / Sets need unique affixes to fill the niche role they are desgined to fill.
2. They gotta nerf +dmg affixes. Like in D2, Most Legendaries / Sets should have +dmg and +armor affixes in order to make then naturaly good rolls.
3. Legendaries / Sets should be an more common and rares should be less common.
4. Many affixes need twinks. + Elemental Resistances need serious buff, HP on picking HG gotta be removed or replaced, + resource pools are pretty useless imo (regen rlz however).
5. They seriously gotta "unlock" more advanced affixes earlier. I see no reason why i can't stack resistances or critical on normal... The way affixes unlocks is the reason why many people who only played normal feels the game is all about stacking your main stats only, which is completly untrue.
You're really comparing D3 to D2, and on stats and itemization?
D3 stats - All on the items, instead of needlessly clicking a button 450 times to get some stats, you switch you stats based on what gear you are using.
D2 stats - JUST enough strength to wear the heaviest armor you plan on wearing, and the rest into vita. Every time. Boring.
D3 items - Even a really well rolled blue has a chance to be viable, if you are just looking for 1-2 stats. Legendaries, just like rares, have to roll good stats to be viable, and since the games only been out 2 weeks thousands of times more rares have dropped than legendaries, meaning nice ones have dropped. In the end you can use some legendaries, some rares and maybe some sets and be damn good.
D2 items - There was only 1 item to use in each slot, for your class. Any other item and you weren't near as powerful. Also boring.
Why the hell do people keep thinking D2's systems were better? They weren't!
Well put, that's the way I see it as well. I feel there are some problems with D3's gear but it's much better than D2.
My problem is that there are a few affixes that seem mandatory in order to be powerful, maybe that changes a bit at higher levels though, I'm only in Nightmare lvl 43 (I'm an achievement whore, I played 40 hours on Normal alone).
So it's KIND OF like D2, where you NEEDED that one super Unique that EVERY other Sorc needed, except in D3 everyone NEEDS +dmg and +aps on rings/amulets (at least if you want the best ones, or am I completely wrong? Could be...).
2H seems to be lacking vs DW also, at least for Monks since you need a passive to have your SPR generation keep up with DW (+25% SPR generation when using 2H). +DMG and +APS also scales way better with 1H weapons, which is hurting 2H weapon choices.
I think 1 thing to consider is that this game is fresh and D2 has had many patches and also an expansion. D3 won't look so similar in a year or 2 from now. When games are this large in scope, it usually takes some time post launch to get things better.
I agree. Very much. Thought I'd say that. Just cause.

So, what you're saying is, instead of starting from LoD 1.13 and using the lessons learned, no, they started from a vacuum, which allows people like you (and like the blue posters in bnet) to say "oh, D2 didn't have this and that at launch". That's the wrong approach. The fact of the matter is that the most important D2 people are no longer at Blizzard, so they have no idea what lessons they should've learned from LoD. The items in D3 are boring and it's already turning me off the game; I played D2 last month with a mate and it was as fun as ever. This should tell you something.
What lessons did they not learn? You can't expect item balance to really port over when the game is so different. And as far as the Legendary vs Rare bit, they were trying to make it so that legendaries weren't always the best items, and they went a bit overboard.

Nostalgia, a very scary thing. Not only in this game but in RL too.
Whats weird though is that many complaints show how much people didn't know what to expect from a Diablo game
eg : "I 'finished' the game and have nothing to do, shit-short game GG"
I am really enjoying D3, but there certainly needs to be some tweaking of systems to ensure the game lasts beyond a few months for players. It'll work out.
I think that the expansion(s) will truly make this game great, much in the way LoD did for D2.
Because this game is Diablo 2.5 amirite?
Way to go to show what you really wanted, a rehashed Diablo 2
That's what most of us wanted, wtf is wrong with you lol.
I would put this game in the trash if I could have D2 in this new engine instead.
No, thats not what most of us wanted. D2 is damn old game which was good at its time but not so much anymore. While you and your friends still playing d2 think everyone wants the same old cripe with baalruns and whatnot this is clearly not what most people want. This is 2012 and not 2000.
It IS what we wanted, us Diablo2 fans.
What you are your WoW friends want does not apply to Diablo.
Wanna play a dumbed down game ? Go back to WoW.
No it isn't. I've played plenty of Diablo and Diablo 2 to know that I did NOT want that. I'm sure there are many more that agree.

It's not Nostalgia, we are still playing DII, I bet you never did though.
You still playing D2 has no bearing on whether you feel nostalgic. Go look up the word.

You mean the people that intended Diablo 1 to be a turned based claymation and made Hellgate London and Torchlight?

No. Things were way less random in D2. Yeah, we can see a legendary meant for barbs with INT on it. It happens. RNG baby.
We're months away from seeing the perfect allocation of RNG stats on items in D3. Keep hunting!!

Warcraft has nothing to do with this....at all.
Neither D3 nor Warcraft has been "dumbed down".
