I was curious about this after blowing a ton of gold on training Blacksmithing.
Do you start off Blacksmithing at, let's just pretend level 1. you train up to level 2 for 5000g increments, then level 3 for 7000g increments, 9000, ect. Then those carry over to Nightmare, Hell and Inferno?
I am having trouble wording what I mean, but do you HAVE TO train the level 5 items, then 10, ect up to access Nightmare and Hell level crafting items? Or does Nightmare and Hell have their own Blacksmithing levels that you can train up wholly independent of your level of training in Normal?
Does training higher Blacksmithing in Normal waste gold you should save for training crafting in Nightmare/Hell, or are you forced to train those levels independent of difficulty and the gold spent on it is good at any time?
Just curious if I wasted gold on items I won't really be using in Normal, or if this was all required anyway.
From what i know, its globally.
Say Blacksmith
Level 1 gives level 4-10ish gear.
Level 2 gives level 14-20ish gear.
Level 3 gives level 24-30ish gear...
So i havent gotten him past the first part of Level 3 so i dont know how it goes from there... But its very much global, and the later levels requires pages or tomes of blacksmithing which i believe can only drop from Nightmare and hell respectively (but its just a guess!)
As far as i understand, you level up one blacksmith and jeweler for your account (excluding HC/other regions). You would carry the level through the difficulties like you would acts.
the only thing is i see they start adding other materials youll need to train them. Maybe levels levels 4-7 need a scroll that only spawns in NM and on? Im still at the end of act 3 norm so im just guessing

there are crafting supplies unique to each difficulty. those crafting items are used in different level ranges of gear (normal crafting items up through level 30, NM for another 20 levels ish, and you should be level capped at 60 by the end of Hell. The crafting materials in Inferno are meant exclusively for level 60 gear.
So basically, even if I had never even touched the Blacksmith until I was level 58 in Hell mode, I would still need to train all that crappy level 5 gear to get to the good stuff?
The next character you start will come with a Blacksmith at whatever level you trained up your first one. Not exactly wasted.
And really, what did you expect? It only makes sense that you should be leveling your artisans up at about the same rate as your character so they stay relevant and let you craft gear to fill in any slot you are lacking.

+1 This
Except its soooo expensive. Ah well, selling the millions of yellows that drop has made me a fair bit
my problem isn't the mats. it's the gold it takes to make items. it's too risky for an item that will likely not have the stats i want so i end up almost never making blues/yellows.

they are expensive, but when you try 2-3 times, you usually get nice stats and you can change with friends if you roll a good item for different class
Playing with friends and exchanging items frealy really adds so much to the game. Every1 gets the appropiate gear so much quicker if you have a diverse group. To level 10 we had Dh, Monk, and Barb the item exchanges were great they constantly found me bows and vice a versa. Then to 20 it was just me the Dh and the Monk, and it continued just at a slower rate.

Awesome, so my money wasn't wasted.

Also, in order to get get to lvl 5 blacksmith and up you need to acquire a bunch of blacksmithing plans which drops from mobs in nightmare and above.
