Same concept basically. Imperius is your Anakin in this case. It's a cheap and easy plot device to help sow discord in the hierarchy of the High Heavens. I only hope there is no redemption for Imperius, that happy ending has been beaten to death. I hope we restore Tyrael to his former glory and help to destroy the corrupted Imperius.
Yah... Blizzard writing has gone down hill since Starcraft 2.
honestly there story telling started sucking since WOW: burning crusade. Back then they make a complete 180 illidain's character and completely made the legion who was the bigger enemy second priority.
If anyone had read the books they would understand this is pretty much Diablo. The Prime Evils may be tough but they play psychological warfare first before they ever go face to face. Hell most of the demons play this sort of game. As for Imperius I will say I didn't like this story, yes he is the dick of the Angiris Council, but I never would have seen him as one to ignore the order of that the council provides.
Given that since the Sin Wars I'm sure he has been unhappy not getting his way, I think this is what that relates to. From his perspective, I think, he is seeing the order the council provides as a weakness. Diablo does like finding these strings and then pulling on them, it is why he is such a powerful Prime Evil. He plays long games really well. You know, getting captured kicked out of Hell into Sanctuary just to meet his goals.
i guess the problem with story writing is, that we - the consumers - already have seen too much ...
we tend to watch tv shows and movies, we play couple of games and everyone tries to come up with his own ideas in story telling ...
somewhere there have to be crossovers ... and the more we've seen, the more crossovers - be they on purpose or just coincidents - we notice ...
also bare in mind that D1 got almost no lore background ... d2 the same (besides the books) ... for d3 and the creation of sanctuary as we will see it from may 15th onwards alot of story and lore had to be filled in ... that's no easy task either.
I thought Diablo was based on The Devil - it being another name for Lucifer and all.
And - correct me if I'm wrong here - one of the characteristics of The Devil is that he tries to turn people to the dark side. For example, in the bible he tricks Eve into eating a forbidden apple, and he spends quite some time trying to turn St Anthony and indeed Jesus Christ to the dark side.
So it seems to me that the correct question is:
Is Diablo the Devil?
Since all this turning to the dark side is so clearly based on stuff about devils and temptations from the bible. And this of course reveals the question asked by this thread to be the stupid thing that it is.
Sif stupid.
Very UNLIKE Satan's temptation of both Eve/Adam and Jesus (dont know about Anthony whoever- he isnt in the Bible) The Big D appeals to the anger and fear INSIDE Imperius- suggesting there is something sinister hidden in him that Diablo can manipulate.
Before the Fall of man (according to Christian theology) there was nothing dark in mankind- that came later- a "sin nature" and JC never had it at any time...
Sooooooo the link isn't the Bible (tho it has echos of it I'm sure) but rather more mainstream stories like Star Wars etc.

Seriously its more about breaking the unity of the angels not converting Imperious to the armies of hell.
You'd think he would have, you know, used terror.
