I've grown up on the blizzard label. I'm 25 now and I've played blizzard games since Diablo 1 was released in the 90s and every other title they've released after it. What I loved about those games is they made me think more than the majority of the games on the market. I knew i could always count on blizzard to give me a work of art. After WoW, things started rolling down hill.
Reading the blue response to Teddy's quote made me realize how much blizzard is just a money grubbing pr machine mimicking tactics from the media. It also made me realize they don't have any self awareness. Their very lively hood rests on the shoulders of these games. They bettered them selves through their entertainment. They've made an empire. They've done something great and they don't have the sense to see it. They just see the money. They've gone from listening to us and building their games in the direction their customers want; to telling us what we want and creating a product for an extremely broad audience.
This is shameful. Video games will be looked to in the future with as much artistic value as the works of Michelangelo, Picasso, or etc. The fact that they don't realize they're the leaders in a community of artists creating a work that far exceeds any form of art mankind has been able to make until now is appalling to me. Dumbing down their legacy for a few extra dollars when they already have billions.
I was going to buy Diablo 3 before I knew anything about it. but now I don't think i'm going to. It's turning into a mainstream piece of crap and the developers strait up refuse to make a fun interesting game anymore.
I have to honestly disagree, mainly on the fact that I also believe that a game doesn't have to be frustrating in order to be good or be worth putting effort into.
The quote and response were used regarding the lack of permanence in character creation. While I loved re-creating alts to level, sometimes I got frustrated as the abilities I wanted to try were so high up in level. Now I can just take one character and try new abilities on the fly. I can actually try every ability they give me untill I find the one build I like. This doesn't mean I won't want to change that build later or that I won't go through the leveling experience again on a whim.
The idea of stat points was very very flawed as well. It's true, if you had a guide, you knew exactly where to put your points to be viable at the end game. If you did not follow one of these guides, you often found yourself punished through no fault of your own. If you want to fix it, oh well that was too bad, you had to start over. Not everyone has the time to sink into starting over or really wants to.
Blizzard does what they think will please the most people and will also make the game accessible to new players. They try their best to do this without making the game lose its challenge for the old guys like me. We will still have a hard game on our hands in inferno, why do we also have to deal with permanent bad decisions?
I think they haven't lost their direction, I think they found it and are following it faithfully. They strive to take every good feature of their own games and games from other devs and put them all in at once. The success of World of Warcraft is paramount to that ideal. They take player feedback and do what they can to improve. The problem is, some players feedback isn't used and then they feel like Blizzard doesn't listen at all. It's not true, it's just they usually know that the vocal minority is not always the voice of the entire community.
Really, I think if you were to try the game, you'd like it. It feels like Diablo, it plays well, and the new skills and runes are fun to play around with. Eventually there will be a "starter" edition so you can wait for that if you don't want to blow your money on uncertainty.

I've played the beta. It felt like WoW turned into diablo. So far, not impressed.
question... why tell us? are you trying to dissuade us? if you don't like the game why are you following a forum designed specifically for it
Prediction: your going to buy it, and love every minute of it... there are tons of people out there who said exactly what you said, and will still buy it.Your 'plight' is nothing new.
I don't mean to troll, the thing that is who cares what you think? You play a game because its fun not because its supposed to stand for something. playing beta is nothing, thats only like 15% of the full game. not even 15%
The evolution of Blizzard games, especially with D3, has demonstrated a great tendency to develop a powerful graphics design experiences.
I don't know what you consider "art", but turning a regular hack-and-slash-loot-hunting-dungeon-crawler into a fast paced visceral adventure it's pretty artistic to me.
You need to see the whole picture, wrap it together, and compare it with games like skyrim, a game with zero artistic appeal, from design to gameplay.
Sure, they want to blast your pockets more than anything in the world, I give you that, but they have changed things, endured the fanbase rage, and struggled against adversity to keep the goal on sight. The goal of creating a unique and perfect piece of gaming experience.

whats over exaggerated is the greatness of this game.
Aside from your dislike of how they responded to the quote, you haven't really said why YOU don't like the game. Are there features you miss or aesthetics you don't agree with? Again, in the context of your argument, I really don't think the loss of permanence is a bad thing.
As far as being more like WoW, I don't see that as being bad either considering how large of a player base it has. WoW and Diablo have always feed off each other. WoW had many ability and gear concepts taken straight from Diablo 2. Now they've come up with some ideas that can be put back into Diablo 3. This is how Blizzard operates. They take the stuff that works and continue to iterate on it.
My god, have you PLAYED diablo 2? diablo 1? Go back and play them now.. They're Bad. REAL BAD. for this time and age. As much as I loved both of those games, they're just a memory. Nostalgia. Get over it. Playing the beta on my friends acnt proved to me that blizzard is doing big and exciting things for D3. I'm a bit worried about customization/runes.. But it's really all about the items. Go play D2 right this second and complain to me that the graphics are way better then D3 with a straight face, i'd slap you silly. Go play D2 and tell me not everyone and their mother was a hammerdin, WWbarb, or some other ONE SPECIFIC BUILD. Because that game had min/maxing, why bother with other trash builds? You call this game mainstream and generic, I think you need to drink a nice hot cup of reality, because in reality there's nothing different from this game and D2/D1 but age and improvements, Minor changes, sure a few could be for the worst, but this is 2012 not 1999.
These are the statements that lead into trolling territory. The word "fanboy" gets tossed around a lot, especially if someone shows even the slightest interest in something. I saw it a lot on the Battlefield 3 forums when comparing it to Modern Warfare 3. Heaven forbid you say you LIKED the game, you were from then on a "fanboy".

That's like saying Warhol and Pollack are respectable artists.

go figure. the lowest common denominator has nothing to say on the matter.
He has legitimate concerns, but I think they are over exaggerated. We don't need to feed the flames.

I hope they release Diablo 3 as it is now though. I don't want a crappy D2 remake.
