For Diablo III, we were aiming to launch by the end of 2011. As we’re announcing globally today, our new target for the game is early 2012.
That is, as far as I know, the last time they spoke about a release date.
was this reply necessary? "early" and "beginning" of 2012 is the exact same thing. the first 5 months of the year can be considered early and beginning of it, and january falls in both. <_<
(this reply wasnt necessary either, im just bored :P)
I'd say they aren't the same thing, considering they're different words.
'Early' in my mind sounds a lot more broad, whereas 'beginning' sounds much sooner. I guess it's subjective all the same.
If any other people in other situations put a date on something for early 2012 you would assume jan or feb at the latest. If I told my grandmother I'd visit her in early 2012 I wouldn't show up in the spring. If it was feb 2012 and your girlfriend told you her period was due in early 2012 you wouldn't wait until march to start worrying.
everyone assumes jan/feb whether they admit it or not and blizzard knows this. they know that's exactly what their implication is when they say early/beginning 2012. if the release date is in march or later it will be an enormous disappointment to everyone. even if it's not in the first two weeks of feb it will still be a disappointment. doesn't matter if you can argue that march or later is technically q1 or early 2012. everyone automatically thinks jan/feb and blizzard isn't clueless to this fact.
All they've said is early 2012, all that means is before June. Techincally anytime before june could be considered early. Could the game launch in January? Sure, but its highly, highly unlikely. Remember everyone getting hyped up for the Q3 beta to start in July? when did it start? oh yeah, at the very end of Q3.
For all those who say some derivative of "well if they don't announce the release date in the next 30 seconds - being its December 3rd - than knowing Blizzard they won't release it until Junaugustuly" you are being protective of your hopes. As many have posted - Blizzard is capable of surprising you, when you least expect it. Or don't want to expect it.
Because really - when they say early 2012, they REALLY mean Fall of 2147. Stupid Blizzard...
before i thought speculation was good about this. but seeing as WoW's release date was accounced 19 days before release so blizard release dates ranged from 3 weeks to 12 weeks in advance ANYTHING is possible at this point. we could get one january 5th for january 31st just as likely as we will get a release date on dec 12th for february 15th. its completely random and speculation is officially pointless, always was.
time to wait and be surprised

I think January or February is likely. If the original plan was to have it out in late 2011. them adding a month to possibly iron out the issues or just extra time to ship and be sure everything is all right. With how the game looks and how well it works I could see the " early 2012" being within the first 2 months.
January just seems to early. I bet it will be March, and likely the day I leave for my Mexico vacation. Techically March isn't considered early anymore.
Have you all seen the news on the front page? The unattuned runed system could possibly be scrapped. Just how long have they worked on this thing? I bet the game would have been ready if not for this turd, and that is what I have called it all along a pile of shit. They spent months poking it with a stick trying to bring life into it, but all they managed to do was cause it to stink more.

So do you feel that because they scrapped the system, they may delay longer than January release? That they are still "trying things out" makes me concerned that the game may be delayed longer than anyone wants, because they want to explore all the options of the rune system.
I guess I was the only person that realized the post was sarcasm.
And nobody said Q1, they said "early 2012", which actually gives Blizzard 2 quarters to work with. Anything before half could be construed as "early in the year".

I personally - liked the way it was...
Not really...its more of an idea problem than an implementation problem. If they could finalize an idea, I am confident it would take almost no time to implement it and test it.
I guess what I am saying is that its not the sole cause of the delay, but even if it was, it would only delay the release announcement.
With that note, Jan is starting to look a bit grim tbh. Not hopeless, but grim. I played a little on patch 7 today, and at least 2 zombies kept standing there after I killed them. And though I have not tried the RMAH this patch, there were a lot of issues with the Gold AH in patch 6. I am thinking the game release will be far more like February at this point. Noway, it will be in April or June like some doomsdayers are predicting though....those people are just afraid to get their hopes crushed.

I wonder what the odds of them officially announcing th their pushing the date back again are, or will they just not release it without formally stating, ok, late 2012 now.

I guess it's all in how you perceive "early" and what other words you use to describe the time of the year. For me, early is Jan-April, mid is May-Aug, late is Sept-Dec.
Doubt it, although it would be pretty awesome. Nonetheless Blizzard needs to do something to not disappoint their investors once more the next quarter. Share dropped down approx. 13.5%, which isn't what you want.
But time will tell and no matter how hard we speculate, it won't change the release date, which will be as quickly as possible.

Thats the beauty of a timeframe like "early 2012" for a developer. It has no concrete meaning like Q1, or Q2 would have. Blizzard specifically chose those words so that if it had to delay past march, they wouldn't have to update their estimate again unless the delays go past June. I Hope i'm wrong, but I've watched every single blizzard release since starcraft 1. Not once have they suprised us with delivering earlier than expected. However every single release has been an amazing game, so its worth the wait.

And even on release day I remember having to download i think 2 patches first up even after installing the game...
