To spice things up a bit I decided to add spells to our Minecraft server. They all require reagents and have cooldowns so they won't break gameplay.
To start off, two "meta" spells have been granted to each player: "help" and "list". You can type "/cast help [spellname]" to learn more about the spell, or "/cast list" to see which spells you know.
There are 8 other spells which are hidden in special shrines throughout the map. Each will be located in some interesting place in our world, be it around our spawn town or neighboring biomes. None of them are located further than 5 minutes walk from spawn and are surface accessible.
The idea was to keep it Diablo themed, so here are the spells:
(cast with Golden Sword ID:283)
- Explosive Blast
- Firebomb
- Electrocute
(cast with Stick ID:280)
- Teleport
- Wave of Force
(cast with Book ID:340)
- Ice Armor
- Energize
- Spirit Walk
To cast a spell once it has been learned, hold the appropriate wand item and right-click to cycle through spells, and left click to cast.
(they roughly do what you would expect, but some had to be adapted to fit :)). Happy hunting!
Adventure mode is coming in 1.8, and you can actually play it now since they released a pre-1.8 patch. It's buggy, but it's available for anyone who wants to get a taste of what's coming up:

As long as it doesn't detract from the DFans Server, of course!
And here's a little teaser for a 1.8: (note the spider webs)
