This is my Ice Wizard build. Designed to do manly ice dmg.
The reason for this character is because in d2 i had a cold sorceress and was a blast! so it will be fun re-living the moments with upgraded spells! I just hope the blizzard doesnt have any "cold immune" monsters, or im screwed!
Please leave comments or suggestions. Thx!
(ps also have a poison summoner build up if youd like to comment on, its in the witch doctor forum)
Still i'd consider changing one or two things.
Spectral Blade is an ability you will want to use when your out of Arcane Power, the problem is that this Ability has to be used in Melee to do any damage. I'd change that with Electrocute and a Golden Runestone. This way you have a quite good Arcane Power Generator.
Also an Option would be to completely get rid of any Signature Spell and instead use Ray of Frost with an Golden Runestone, which would remove it's Arcane Power Cost.
And replace that Slot with Wave of Force and a Golden Runestone, to gain some more crowd control when Enemies get really close to you.
With this you would be able to repel all enemies, and thus you could also change your Blur Passive to Critical Mass.
You may ask why? Well you consider using an Alabaster Runestone in your Blizzard spell, which makes your Blizzard critting for 25% more, combined with some crit items you would be able to lower the cooldowns on Frost Nova, Wave of Force and Teleport, which would also mean that you could reconsider the Runestones you need for them.
thx for the input! good ideas! specially about the spectral blade, i will defenetly take ur advice on that. I guess i will have to wait to get a full build to see how everything really works and procs.
also, will getting rid of a signature spell and using ray frost might work, i guess gotta check dps to see which one works best with the build.
Firstly I would not have used the meteor rune as a cold spell I would have left it as a fire spell and used it as my backup incase of high resistance. I would go with the gold rune because if I encounter enemies with high cold red I was to cast as many meteors as possible. I think it would make a better backup spell than the physical dmg on the spectral blade, meteor will get the job done where spec. blade might be a little weak for taking down 1 strong unit.
That being said, I would not use spectral blade and put a gold rune in ray of frost and use that as my go-to spell. Chilling and freezing people at range whenever you please making good use of black ice. Keeping RoF ranged also means you can chill units at range before dropping blizzards and meteors.
In place of spec. blade I would use ice armor with indigo runestone it will synergize nicely with black ice AND blur, it should allow you manage melee units better.
Main goal is to try to use slow time to hit mobs with LONG LASTING blizzards and meteors. slow time is also a micro-intensive skill and could be used defensively (if available) to run to safety. I usually wouldn't put much emphasis on attacks that deal damage over time and are avoidable however, the crowd control capability is really good with these cold skills so you should be able to take advantage of long blizzards and meteors.
If I was playing a cold wiz I would try to get as much +% chance to crit stats as possible because cold damage intrinsically freezes enemies when critical cold damage is dealt.
I though of a cold build as well (and a few more), and obviously has similar spells but i consider cold has a "catch me if you can" a bit more built around HC, so no glass cannon, and a few more utilities.
like atumre, RoF with gold is great enought to skip the signatures (in fact i my fav build is another without signature, have no prob with them but if you can pull one off without them, why not?)
About the guardian, well, i'm really covering my ass, ready for everything, specially ranged attacks could still scare you in inferno HC, so the ilusions on the teleport are the same.
I'm basicly going for black ice freeze (nova), then nuke (ray and meteor), but maily and foremost ...."can't touch this "
now it makes more sense what you guys are saying about the ray frost against the signature spell! makes more sense, plus good way to have the entire build being pure cold which is cool! , gunna play with the skills and repost it! lmk if its better

Here is the updated build, but with actually familiar causing an xtra 30% more dmg while active!!!! much better! i expect not to be touched with using cold and teleport, so im not worried about being hit too often, thats the purpose of using cold. lmk what u guys think
This Build is excellent for grouping up with friends and playing! I'm gonna save it for myself hehe
Ofc you will have to change some Spells on some Bosses, depending on their Abilities, to be able to survive.
But as for Minions, you will have great cc, slow and damage
haha thanks, yea this build will really bump up the cold dmg done by the wizard. Especially with the familiar up, plus the crits!
cant wait to try out this build once the game goes live.
Im sure im going to have to play with the build once i see how it works out during inferno, but for the time being... im happy how it looks!

Imo, not enough survival for Nightmare/Hell/Inferno. You'll need at least 2 defensive spells (one armour spell for shhhhhhhhhhhhhhure!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
You have sleet storm and spectral blade but nothing to defend you while you're close to the enemy using it which will mean your doom! This build might work in A1-A2 normal but I think that's when you'll have to change it.

PS: in this post there is an updated build of my cold sorceress
^Not really a fan of this ranged build but I hope you get my point^
I see what you are saying, but the whole point of my build is to not get touched, as i will be freezing inplace with nova, teleport and then range.
having the RoF will b my close range, i guess we can assume what we want, but we will have to see if there will be any immunities to "cold". If there are, then im obviously going to have to change the build around to accomidate to it
before I found out that the beta key char-build contest didn't start yet, I searched this forum and discovered this thread which waked the urge to post my build. At first, I want to praise you all for all the "frostmage"-love, although Icewizard sounds better (in my not native-english ears).
Secondly I have to show you my spec: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#jlObTi!dYe!bZcYZY
There are some obious choices like comet, but I want to clarify why I have chosen Teleport and Mirror Image.
With the longer duration of my Blizzard, and speccing "ray of frost" into a signature skill with the golden runestone, I want to stretch the fight duration and progress slowly but secure through the dungeon. Beside the obious advantages of teleport and mirror image, they perfectly fit into a frost build: Imagine you are outdoors whilst a blizzard causes you to blink frequently with your eyes.
Your hood is pulled over them, and they are frequently hit by snowflakes - you can't use them properly as they are red and watery. Things appear to be at a different position or have a wrong quantity. With teleport summoning additional mirror images and the mirror image spell itself, your enemies in Diablo3 will feel the same! "Where is the Wizard? Is he the only attacker? Why do I shiver?"
Thats why this is the best frost build in my opinion, even if I don't know if virtual zombies have feelings ...
First thing: I'm glad you found this thread helpfull
Second: I've build an ice sorceress in d2 so it only seemed natural to do it here. When I use to play wow, I also had an ice Mage , I guess I'm just attracted by these types of builds.
Third: nice build, I like the idea of mirror image, although a spell like slow time would be more of an interest to me. Get this, slow time could b used as a barrier in front of ur wizard to keep missile type attacks ( magic, arrows/bolt, etc) easily dodged, and also used to slow a group down and cast blizzard over the slow time sphere. I will play around with this build once I have the game, to see how the mechanics work.
Fourth: let's keep the comments going!
So,for the Wizard. Will there be any AoE builds? Like how there was in D2. Ice lance farming and such?
Isn't ice lance from wow? Can't remember if it was in d2 or not.
Aoe type attacks are meteor and blizzard for ice, so you could base a build around that I guess
now with the recent changes, how will this affect the gameplay for the cold sorceress? I cant tell unless i get into beta! to test this new skill and rune system that has been implemented! I guess i will just take one of those beta keys without any complaint and let you guys know how it is through beta feed bad to the awesome guys here at DiabloFans!!!! = )
Teaming up 2-3 frostwizard's would be awesome since you gain benefits from freezing targets.
Good teamplay and frost wizards may be a übergroup.
Yeah Man! 2 frostwizards in PVP will be OP! constantly hitting crits as most of the time the targets will be frozen! hopefully you can join with friends and it is not just random teams!
On another note, hows the new patch 13 for the wizard? any good changes? I dont have beta so i cant tell. Hopefully we are getting close to release now that the last system has been worked on and is being tested!
2nd: i was also thinking of using the templar with this build, although the enchantress also would benifit this class. The templar would obviously serve the purpose of being a punching bag as I range attack, constanly using teleport to get him out of situations where he might be low on health.
what do you guys think?
One goes for Slow Time and some defense, while the others take crit multipliers and hydras.
And then all teleport, all the time haha
Sounds too easy to be honest, but it would be amazing.
But we may forget about the late game resistances that players will have, and with their skills, as for Barbarian can take alot of damage.
Besides that,
On another note, hows the new patch 13 for the wizard? any good changes?
I believe they have changed Ray of Frost - Golden Runestone. It does not reduce it's cost to zero anymore but the cost's are still pretty low.
oh man, hopefully that didnt happen, that would mess up my build
/goes to check patch notes!
In response to your classic D2 cold sorc build, I felt it necessary to construct a similar D2 FIRE build using classic spells with a fresh new twist using added skill rune effects. Like you said in your post, if there are any 100 percent fire immunes out there, this build is pretty much worthless. But if not this will be a very fun build, putting out substantial damage, with decent survivabilty for those later difficulties. Let me know what you guys think.!

its an all fire build alright, but i feel like ( and its not your fault) the wizards fire attacks have been nerfed. u will b spamming shock pulse the entire time while you pop up a couple of hydras and wait for your meteor cooldown to pop, rinse, and repeat. i just feel like a fire wizard will get very boring quick... i almost wish you could put a rune into other attacks like desintegrate that changes the attack from arcane damage to fire dmg, or also with the blast attack, but there isnt.
Yea i know what you mean, i made up a Frost Wizard Build a few topics below you, and it's also using Ray of Frost, but i need confirmation from someone who is playing the Beta, or i have to wait untill Blizzard updates their Calc.
If it is reduced to a cost less then 10 AP your build will still be fine you just won't be building AP while casting.
It would seem a not such a huge difference.
