Build Guide

*Note: Remember to hardcast Flash in addition to the freecast Flashes from Etched Sigil, for double the Flashes during the Lightning rotation of Convention of Elements. (Flash is chosen over Chain Reaction due to (A) the damage reduction effect of Flame Ward, which relegates Lightning duty to Explosive Blast. (B) Flash outdamages Chain Reaction due to having half the cooldown, but double the cost. Cost is irrelevant due to Etched Sigil.)

Otherwise, no other spells should be hard-cast except to proc Tal'Rasha's 6 piece bonus. This is to ensure Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac's full attention for Diamond skin. Diamond skin will have 100% up-time during fights, catering to excellent survivability, and sizable damage from Diamond Shards.

Cooldown reduction is king, for both DPS and defense. At least 50% (including Evocation) is recommended.

Galvanizing Ward is taken for the excellent synergy with Ashnagarr's and Diamond Skin. Tested that absorbing damage with Diamond Skin allows Galvanizing Ward beneath it to refresh, as long as Diamond Skin is unbroken.

Life Regeneration and Life per Hit are lesser options. They will have no function unless your shields are broken, which should be a rare occasion. Therefore, a minimal amount of regeneration is functional to keep you topped off, as chip damage in those brief windows of shieldlessness have ample to time to recover under the layer of a new shield. You are better off getting armour and resistance (vitality is fine, although bear in mind that your effective health is already extremely high, from your rapidly regenerating shields).

Magic Weapon Deflection is therefore taken as an important substitute to Life Regeneration, as it actually works on top of your other shields.

As for Legendary Gems, the defensive Gems were a bit of a conundrum. Esoteric Alteration seems superfluous, due to the massive amount of resistance Wizards already possess, which is further doubled by Tal'Rasha's 4 piece bonus. Molten Wildebeest's Gizzard brings life regeneration, an obvious no-no.

So the choice lies between Mutilation Guard, which is excellent damage reduction against melee attacks, and Moratorium. I personally went with Moratorium due to its synergy with Force Armour, as Force Armour's damage cap applies before Moratorium. As such, enemy attacks that deal more than 35% hp damage, are instantly reduced to 22.75% instead. This works extremely well with a shield build, due to the fact that despite the damage being capped based on your maximum health, the capped damage can be absorbed by shields.

This means that with Ashnagarr's Blood Bracer, Diamond Skin (80%), Deflection and Galvanizing Ward (120%), one can expect to be at 300% effective hp (shields + hp) at the beginning of every shield cycle, and yet Force Armour and Moratorium would only take hard hp, rather than effective hp into account. 22.75% from Force Armour + Moratorium is therefore effectively only 7.58% of your total effective health.

That any damage above 35% of your Max HP, would be reduced to 7.5% of your effective HP, seems pretty good. On paper, anyway.

*Private build, yet to test. Likely lacks damage. May replace Moratorium with Stricken; Hergbrash with Tal Rasha's belt, allowing room for the Endless Walk set.
