Before you read all of this remeber that this is not optimal for solo gr. its possible but not optimal. this build is best for 2-4 man gr.
This might be the top dps build if wizards or reapers wraps get nerfed. the pure dps fro this build is insane.
Edit/ Update: I have completed a 75 with 4 minutes left and I am pushing gr 77 to get into leaderboards with this build. I have about 15 000 str and caldesan's on 7 things.

Gear:
Head: So for the head you just want a good ancient helmet. id say Leorics is best in slot because of the cooldown reduction to Akarat's Champion. Andariels for the fire dmg+.
Shoulders: You can pretty much have anything thats ancient here but i have the DWM for that extra dps.
Amulet: Pretty much anything works.
Torso: Cindercoat for dmg but if you dont have good ancient one you can use Aquilla and have something else in the cube
Wrist: Akkhans Manacles. nothing else.
Hands: Magefist for dmg but any other works too.
Pants: Pox faulds for a tiny amount of dmg but anything works here too.
Waist: Belt of the Trove for bombardments. Razor Strap if yo play with a globe barb, just easy dmg. you are going to stand in the middle of a lot of shit and Razor Strap just helps a bit with the trash.
Feet: Firewalkers for some easy DPS. Ice Climbers work too for cc immunity
Rings: LoN obviously.
Weapon and shield: Gyrfalcons Foote so you can spam shields. Jekangboard so shields spread more and for the 200% extra dmg.
Gems:
Bane of the Stricken: this is pretty much only for rift guardian. you can remove it if you have another single target dps but its often Bis in higher gr
Esoteric Alteration: you are going to stand in the middle of a lot of shit so this just helps you survive.
Pain Enhancer: This is going to get you to the 5 APS that you want. the dmg also helps a lot with the rift guardian getting stacks on him.
Cube
Weapon slot: Akkan's Leniency for the insane dmg. this is what gives you the most insane dmg. you can have around 100 stacks in a nice tile and then everything melts.
Armor slot: Aquilla if you are not wearing it. otherwise use Leoric's if you are not using it.
Jewelry slot: Convention for most dmg but you can have any immunity amulet if you lack defence.
Basic gear and stats:
The thing that makes this build work is attack speed. you want to focus on attack speed on as many things as possible.
Attack Speed = DMG.
Think of it this way: if you have full crit and full dmg gear but no attack speed you will have ok dmg and you akkhan's Leniency will get about 60 stacks at most. That's 1200% dmg increase. and then you have maybe 500% CHD and 50% CHC. so if you do 1000 dmg that will equal to 78 000 dmg when you crit.
Now if you have full attack speed you will get around 100 stacks so thats 2000% dmg increase. then you have maybe 30% CHC and 350% CHD. so if you do 1000 dmg that will equal to 94 500 dmg when you crit.
Now you might say "but you have less CHC" and thats why we have Judgement Resolved. so we can get that extra crit.
Area damage is awesome. you want to stack area dmg too. you can get it on some items if you cant have CHD, CHC or IAS
Abilities and runes:
Blessed shield: For blessed shield you want to use the rune combust. now you might ask me " why not scattering Thrrow?".
So the reason we are not using holy dmg scattering throw is because Combust have so much more dmg. and the way Akkhan's Leniency work is that "if the shield HITS an enemy you get 20% dmg so when the shield explodes with combust you get stacks for anyone that got hit. this is how you reach 120 stacks in big crowds. The Bracers work amazing with this rune too, the 33% chance to explode gets extremely powerfull if it explods on the first target. I have done 70 000m Crits with those explosions. Plus the fire dmg is easier to give bonuses to.
Judgement: We are using resolve for the easy CHC
Shield Glare: We are using Divine veredict for the increased dmg.
Iron Skin: Just damage reduction.
Laws of Valor: We are using critical because we lack in CHD. if you feel you die too much you can swap this with Laws of Justice.
Akarat's Champion: We are using prophet because its OP. the 150% armor and the safety net is too good to give up.
The Rift:
Minions: So when you kill the minions you just want as much density as possible. that's why a support barb is amazing for this build. if you get a big group of around 30-50 minions everything just melts. if you stumble upon an elite or a pack just focus the pack. when convention rolls to fire dmg you can kill an elite with 2 tril hp in about 5 sec. you make massive crits if you have trash mobs around for fuel. you always want to stand in the middle of everything so you can reach the highest health mob and get bonuses from pain enhancer. its important to fight mobs that give high% gr progression, its easier for you to kill the higher health minions. you should leave a place if there is less than 5 mobs. no matter what. leaving an elite on 25% hp hurts but you have to do it because otherwise it takes too long and you will lose time. they beauty of this is that if you have a zdps group barb, he can just feed you trash mobs while you focus the big ones.
Guardian: You want to get a guardian that spawn things. if you get something like Skeleton King or Saxtris its going to be easy because you get so many stacks. if you go against a rift guardian that never summons anything like BloodMaw or Raiziel you are gonna have a bad time. its possible to do but it goes four times as fast if you have a guardian that spawns mobs.
I have dona a solo 75 with this build but thats because im too squishy. the dmg is enough for team 90's as long as you have a good barb that can group things up nice and neatly.

Is there a variant of this as a Solo build?
Esp with regards to Gem choices.
Stuck at 68 at the moment.
Would you be able to advise with regards to some gem choices.
I currently put in esoteric and the damage stagger gem and bane of the trapped, but I just don't have enough damage to get there before the timer. and the Shield damage doesnt stack up fast enough.
Please, tell me how did you get 400m toughtness. It looks fabulously.
I've been playing around this build about a week and ended up with one similar to yours.
My Esoteric alteration is just 55 lvl, giving 37.5% dmg reduction, but it grows slow, so it's ok. Also I've got Vigilante passive, thanks to the hellfire amulet.
Ancient items are 11/13, and those 2 are ring and amulet, witch don't give much impact on toughtness (yeah, 4% reduction isn't there, but it won't give me that much)
My paragon lvl is 636, all defensive traits are maxed.
In the end I've got 134 m clean toughtness and 275m with Akarat's Champion active.
With defensive law I've got 148m clean and 500m with Akarat + Active Law. Are you talking about that one? It lasts not very long. Akarat got about 55% uptime with my 58% CDR, Law is up about 66% of time with Long Arm of the Law. It's never enough to finish an elite pack and so I can't understand why did you abandon Horse, when it's the only way to escape from angry mob pack when all defensive skill are down.
I remember about Iron Skin, its uptime is the worst ~50% and its just illegal to use all skills, because you'll definitely stay without defence.
Rotaiton of defensive skills looks like this:
Akarat + Law
Law down
Akarat + Iron Skin
Iron Skin down
Law + last 2-3 seconds of Akarat
Akarat down
Iron Skin + last couple seconds of Law
Law down
Last couple seconds of Iron Skin
Nothing
Indestructible
By now I've managed to finish 69 grift with 3 minutes left and it was just lucky rift. This build is amazing and I love it, but it seems, that it just can't get much higher, because of lack of survivability. I want too fix it, but nothing seems to work. Please, share your ideas.
Thanks for those thoughts.
Also, on what stuff do you have attack speed?
Looks pretty solid, would love to see it in action, any chance you have a video?
