Build Guide
After looking at the options for wizard in 2.4, I found Firebird's a bit too lacking and wasn't such a fan of the DMO playstyle being tied to bubbles, so I set about trying to build an effective TalRasha's build not intended just for speedfarming, but to see how far I can push a pure TalRasha channelling build in GRs, as I've been having a blast with variations on this build so far.
I expect the top DMO builds will be capable of pushing higher GR clears than anything with TalRasha including this build, but I wasn't going to let that stop me from seeing how far I could take things without DMO, and I expect to be able to clear GR 70+ with this once I'm able to optimize my gear better. I was able to clear GR 60 solo in seasonal with level 25 gems only, no cube augments, mostly non-ancient, not quite ideally itemized gear, and P300 or so and felt I could easily have gone even higher with my current gear/paragon, so I feel this build has some potential and wanted to share my setup.
The damage potential is very high with this build compared to anything else I've seen with the exception of the DMO twister and arcane orb builds, which are obviously the top two at the moment.
The key thing with this variation compared to other channelling builds is adding in elements of the explosive blast builds floating around to make use of the 60% damage reduction and high DPS of the wand of woe/orb of infinite depths boosted explosive blast, which frees up the jewelry cube slot for convention of elements and the F/R combo.
Convention of elements is very strong with this build as you can make heavy use of both the lightning and fire cycles, as well as get some mileage out of the arcane/cold cycles with your 2 pc TR meteors, so it was a priority for me to find a way to fit it into my build without sacrificing too much survivability.
I had previously experimented with a version incorporating a cubed Halo, cubed Deathwish in place of the Orb of Infinite Depth, and Ice Armor crystallize, in place of CoE and Explosive Blast, with APD in the bracers rather than the shielding bracers, but found that this version has a few significant advantages.
Firstly, ice armor doesn't contribute towards your 4 TalRasha elemental stacks, which means by replacing it with Explosive blast, I was able to gain more freedom in selecting my other skills while keeping the full 4 TR stacks. Additionally the 60% damage reduction from the halo is melee only, while with explosive blast it applies to everything, leaving survivability more consistent which I found beneficial, and it also contributes a significant 20% damage buff and does a very high amount of DPS itself.
This also allowed me to use the weapon cube slot for the survivability rather than the jewelry which allowed me to fit CoE in for an enormous overall damage increase, without giving up too much survivability.
Etched sigil is the key piece in this build, as it will constantly rain very high damage free meteor showers while you channel arcane torrent, as well as doubling your explosive blast damage as it does not set off the EB cooldown when it is triggered from the etched sigil.
The combination of wand of woe explosive blast, meteor shower, the talrasha 2 pc, and arcane torrent will absolutely melt enemies, and the build is able to survive through a combination of 25% DR from channelling mantle, 60% DR from orb of infinite depth, Esoteric alteration's ~50-60% DR + secondary effect when fully levelled up, and an absolutely huge pool of shields for extra HP which will refresh every few seconds if enemies aren't able to break through it quickly enough, scaling off your max HP thanks to the 2.4 changes to absorbs.
You can also easily adjust passives for more tank or damage as needed, with both Audacity and Illusionist being flexible slots, you could replace with Blur and Unwavering will for even further tankiness.
Overall there's room for quite a bit of tweaking in the skill selection, the core of the build is the etched sigil + wand of woe + orb of infinite depths explosive blast with chain reaction, either disintegrate or arcane torrent, and meteors for added etched sigil dps.
Most of the damage in the build comes from the meteors and explosive blast, the arcane torrent does significant damage as well if you have opportunity to stand still and channel for several seconds in a stretch, but etched sigil will proc even with only brief bursts allowing you to kite and maintain mobility while still doing excellent dps, and you can pop in and out of the fight for the few seconds needed to allow your 1.5 million hp+ shields to refresh to full strength, making you very difficult to kill.
As far as gems you want amethyst in the helm to boost your max life, and topaz in the chest/pants for damage, or diamond to boost your tankiness if needed.
Something else I had also been considering was stacking RCR, dropping the IAS, and cubing Aquila Cuirass rather than the AP reduction belt, with the right tweaks, it's possible to channel indefinitely without the belt, and it would provide another 50% DR to the build, at the cost of being much harder to gear for.
I like this and I am going to try it when I get home.
What GRift have you been able to get to solo?
I see your fire, lightening, and arcane dmg for tals, where is your cold dmg coming from?
The cold damage comes from the explosive bolts rune on shock pulse
Just curious, have you tried this build with the twister sword instead?
It feels like it should be doing more dmg, channeling arcane torrent alone will put you up at 8 stacks. thats 1200% more dmg on twisters. multiplied with the tals 4set will put you on the same dmg as the dmo builds.
I had considered that aphrel and I'm much looking forwards to trying it out, however at paragon 520 or so this season I've still yet to find a halfway decent twisting sword, when I do I'll definitely be testing it out!
I lucked out and got a fantastic ancient twisting sword that rolled with a perfect 150% twister bonus, high damage range, int, LPH, and was able to reroll a 10% damage range onto it and gift it last night, so I put together a twister variation on this which does indeed seem to do dramatically higher damage output played correctly, I'll be likely posting a writeup of my twister variation in the near future if I don't find a good guide already posted by someone else on the site!
Hey there. Recently tried out this build last night and I am starting to push higher than I could with DMO to be honest. Great work all in all!
I can't wait to try this build!
Me too! I'm looking for a good Wizard build that is not focusing around energy twister or around arcane orb.
Wizard ain't my class but I would like to have one good wizard that is powerful. I think I found the build, I was looking for!
I'm so glad I found this build, and thank you for posting it. Is there a link to your profile that I didn't see? I'm new to all this, so I probably didn't see it. I'm kind of an outcast, as I play on the PS4, but the game is still amazing and I'm having a ton of fun with it. I found an ancient Aether Walker that has 2950 dps, and that's the weapon I've been using for a while. I have a Wand of Woh in my inventory, but it's not an ancient, and the dps is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than my AW. Any ideas of how I should be farming an ancient Wand of Woh?
This looks like a lot of fun. I'm paragon 600, and most of the end game builds for wizards revolve around arcane orb and slow time twisters...not my favorite playing style. I can do GR 58 with relative ease with my current set up, but anything else will be a stretch. I use the Tal Rasha 6 piece bonus and Firebird 4 piece bonus hybrid, with Focus/Restraint. Biggest issue is my amulet (Tal Rasha) doesn't have a socket. It didn't originally have critical hit chance, so I had to roll the life on hit and I got a perfect 10% critical hit chance. Re-rolling the 10% critical chance for a socket seems like so much of a loss....I wonder if I can get by with just two legendary gems.
Hi there, I'm glad people have been enjoying the build, it's not going to get you as far as the top builds, but I definitely found it fun to play.
@User_403630, I have been running a twister version of this for a while that's served me well, the higher damage potential has let me solo a GR 70 for the seasonal journey at ~P700 and 3 or so rank 65 gem augments with little trouble, with Ranslors bracers and no slow time bubble requirement, I find the twisters to be pretty fun actually, the main thing I don't like about the DMO builds is DMO itself haha.
If you have a great Aether Walker, the Wand of Woh is actually not terribly important to this build, I just happened to luck out and find a great ancient WoW early in the season. It provides a nice boost to EB's contribution to your damage, but you could just as easily run pretty much whatever has the best weapon DPS and be fine, Aether Walker I actually think is a worthy substitute even if you do have the ancient WoW, the mobility is really helpful, and frees up the Illusionist passive slot for Blur, Elemental Exposure, Dominance, or Astral Presence, depending on what you feel you need.
As for your amulet and legendary gems, I have long since stopped using the molten wildebeast's gizzard, it sucks because it doesn't get boosted by the Blood Bracers and while your shields are up the LPS is a dead stat, I need to update the guide accordingly, it was written assuming those two played nice together. I instead use Bane of the Stricken in that slot, as it helps a great deal on Rift Guardians which this build needs a bit of help against once you get into 65+ GRs, or I use Boon of the Hoarder when speedfarming with RoRG and Sage's.
As a newer/less geared 70 where you might not have high level legendary gems and all the pieces you need, the third legendary gem socket isn't going to be the end of the world, but eventually you will want 3 legendary gems, no one stat on your amulet will outperform the 3rd gem, but you can get away without one for a while I think.
One thing that I hadn't taken into account when I originally wrote this is the ability to weave hard casts of your spender in with the free channelling casts, you only need to channel for a split second and then you can hard-cast a meteor shower or two in between your next etched sigil proc due to the 1 sec ICD.
With arcane torrent's ridiculous AP returns with APoC and Conduit magic weapon, whenever you have density you can actually sustain launching off ~3 meteor showers every second this way which is a huge DPS boost.
Playing this way also leaves you a lot less locked into channeling and lets you play a lot more mobile, which goes nicely with Aether Walker as well, though you will likely need to invest in some more AP regen as the hardcasted meteors, teleports, and channelling can be a heavy resource drain.
Naturally, if you switch the WoW for a Twisting Sword, this lets you also get a lot of stacks of the twister buff out, and your damage goes through the roof, in exactly the same way as this same combo works for the DMO variants of this build, but without being tied to your bubbles, I plan on posting a writeup of my Tals twister build I've been using shortly along with an update to this guide for those who are enjoying the meteors, work's just been keeping me busy lately.
I just wrote up a guide on the twister variation on this I've mentioned a few times here, for anyone who is interested: http://www.diablofans.com/builds/76442-s5-pure-tal-rasha-twister-eb-etched-sigil-for-70
I've personally switched over to the twister version a while back, and found it to generally give better results than this meteor version, but don't let that stop you from giving meteors a shot if you just don't like using the twisters for playstyle or aesthetic reasons.
Hey, thanks! I certainly will give it a try. I found a Tal Rasha amulet with a socket, which enabled me to use a 3rd legendary gem. That actually helped a TON. It's not as good as my other amulet (dps wise), but the gem makes a big difference. I haven't had a ton of playing time lately, but I've been messing around with the new build some and it's incredible. I found a slightly better Wand of Woh, but it's still not an ancient (grrrrrr). The dps drop from my Ancient Aether Walker (2950) is significant, but I'm still well over a million with the new Woh.
With the new Etched Sigil build, I did GR 60 in about half of the allotted time last night. It was awesome. It literally took about 6 minutes, and I didn't have any deaths. I honestly don't know how much higher I can go with this build, as sooner or later the mobs will hit hard enough to break through the shields, but so far so good. I'm guessing around 62 the build won't work with my gear, and the shields will just get destroyed. But...62 isn't too bad, especially with a fun build style. I could also switch my legendary gems around for more survivability. Currently, I'm using the massive toxin gem (level 53), esoteric gem (51), and I believe the 3rd is the Bane of something...the one that provides 20% dps after killing an elite mob (53). It gives 20% dps for over 80 seconds, plus damage to elites. Considering the fast nature of this build, the 20% is virtually always up.
I'm guessing I'll have to switch that one for Taeguk soon, due to the immese armor it provides. But that gem is kind of obnoxious. The 3 second timer goes so damn fast, and keeping up 70 stacks is sort of annoying. That being said, having a gem that provides both defense and offense is pretty insane. I haven't been using Bane of the Trapped...do you find it that useful? But what impairing effect are you using? Are you just talking about the cold effect from the primary attack? That doesn't seem like it would work that well, as I don't seem to be hitting too many opponents with the erratic bolts. Does the provided aura work well? Have to work now, but can't wait to read more. This build has me excited about my wizard again, and can't wait to see what level I can get to.
I'm sure everybody is wondering how I'm progressing with this build (totally joking, lol), so here's a report:
The explosive blast/meteor build with the defensive benefits of Orb of Infinite Depth is just too much fun, and completely viable. I haven't pushed the threshold of the build's limits TOO much, but I was able to complete GR 63, albeit not easily like the previous ones. I still didn't die, but my dps finally seemed to hit a tiny wall. I'm starting to see why the aforementioned legendary gems are used, especially Bane of the Stricken. The 25% bonus to rift guardians is so important, and the other effect finally comes into play. Previously, trash mobs and many elites died in just a few hits, so the 1.25% damage increase per hit seemed pointless. But NOW, the rift guardians are taking so many hits, that the damage increase per hit PLUS the 25% damage increase is absolutely vital.
I've run out of "reusable parts" for crafting, and I'm having a difficult time finding them. I need them in order to craft an Ancient Wand of Woh, which is essentially the only item I don't have. I have a ridiculous Aether Walker, Serpent Sparker, and Ancient Sunkeeper. I have several Wand of Wohs, but don't have an ancient one. That's what I need in order to get my dps to the level required for higher greater rifts.
Twister Variation: In addition to not having an Ancient Woh, I also don't have an Ancient Twisted Sword. That being said, the dps was still ridiculous. I was able to scream through greater rift 57 and had fun doing it. The ONLY problem I have with this build is losing the Wand of Woh benefit (3 additional explosive blasts). I found it much harder to maintain the defensive/offensive stacks of Orb of Infinite Depth, thus, actually took some damage (crazy, huh? lol). It's a fantastic build, no doubt about it, but not as much fun to me as the explosive blast/Wand of Woh build. To be fair though, I didn't give it too much of an effort. I played around for a bit, but not long. I also need to re-do a lot of my stats. My buffed dps with the two builds is 1.3 million, 31 million hp's....but I am PAINFULLY low in the 3rd stat. I'll need to severely bolster that up.
What is everyone else's numbers?
I managed to find a pretty good "non-ancient" Wand of Woh, but still searching for the bell-ringer, LOL. This new one has 2550 dps and is pretty sick. It hurt to use one of my last socketing items (gift of Ramaldan or something?), but I did it anyway...got one left, and I'm saving that bad boy, LOL.
I like the flexibility of this build, as I was able to use alternate gear solely for DPS, which enables me to fly through Torment 10 normal rifts, and even tear through GR 58 and 59. Buffed up the dps past 2 million, but my other stats aren't viable. Hahaha.
Well, as much fun as I'm having with this build, it doesn't seem to be as powerful as the old stand by. The Tal Rasha 5 piece with Firebird 3 piece (and ring of royal grandeur). The damage I can do with that set is mind boggling, and I can clear GR 58 in just a couple minutes. I cube the Etched Sigil, Hergbash, and obviously ring of royal. If you haven't tried it...I suggest you do so.
