Build Guide
This is the build I used to complete the season 5 conquest, "The Thrill," which requires you to complete at least GR45 with no set items.
Gems: diamond in helm, diamonds or rubies in torso & legs.
== HOW TO PLAY ==
- Furious Charge as needed
- Proc Strongarm Bracers
- Generate fury
- Proc Band of Might
- Threatening Shout as needed
- Trigger Avalanche & Earthquake
- 25% damage amplification
- Generate fury
- Avalanche as needed
- Do damage
- Generate fury
- Note cooldown is reduced as you spend fury
- War Cry as needed
- Trigger Avalanche & Earthquake
- Toughness buff
- Generate fury
- Battle Rage as needed
- Damage buff, especially AOE
- Hammer of the Ancients unless moving
- Do damage
- Spend fury = heal yourself (make sure you have Life per Fury Spent on gear or at least took Bloodthirst passive)
- Spend fury = reduce cooldown on Avalanche
- Generate fury with the Gavel of Judgment
That's it. GR45 was pretty simple from there. Read on if you want to know more.
== Survivability ==
If anything this build has a bit too much survivability for GR45. We are using three items that cut damage in half (approximately):
- Unity
- Split damage with your follower who is invincible
- Band of Might
- Take 60% less damage after casting Furious Charge
- Aquila Cuirass
- Fury should be near the max the whole time so this item will cut 50% damage
== Why not Earthquake? ==
It doesn't seem possible to get both a big Earthquake damage boost and a HotA damage boost, but you can get Avalanche and HotA damage boosts together with belt and weapon/bracers, respectively.
Also, Avalanche base does physical damage, but Avalanche Volcano does fire damage, which matches HotA Smash. Also the Volcano rune damage boost is pretty nice on paper.
== Gear Requirements ==
It is definitely possible to complete GR45 by substituting some of the "REQUIRED" items with items that are still pretty good. Let folks know in the comments what substitutions work... because acquiring gear can be time consuming.
== Variations ==
Some have told me they had success with Obsidian Ring (lower CDs = more outgoing damage) in place of Unity (halve incoming damage).
Thx for the Guide!
I used some other items like Fire Walkers for the Boots which had synergy with the fire dmg,
Skull of Resonance (which did an awesome job keeping me alive and dealing additional dmg)
and of course Dread Iron - which I don´t understand is not in your build but the your whole build is based on Avalanche. The dmg push ist pretty insane ;-)
Also I did not have Unity, so I used a Band of Might and Obsidian Ring of the Zodiac which both helped me to stay alive and to lower the cooldowns faster.
Thanks for this. Dread Iron missing was a misclick, and has been fixed.
Thanks for writing this up. I had trouble doing this 100-200Paragons prior with a mix of 1piece of every barb set item i had. My biggest problem was weak damage and couldn't keep up with the timer. I'll be using this build as a guide to help me out.
Why require Dread Iron when the build doesn't use ground stomp?
Dread Iron gives a big damage boost to Avalanche.
For those players who are like me, farmed all the gear and naturally got rekt in their first grift 45, you need to try again. I got Thrill on my 4th attempt due to shithouse denisty. A Tip, use Volcano, Falter and Avalance together everytime, and of course charge around a bit to get all the mobs in a big pile.
Is the damage boost just not documented? For dread irons it just says "Ground Stomp causes an Avalanche."
edit: Nevermind. Just saw it's in the "Random Magic Properties" and not really documented on the item description her or on the D3 item pages.
Thanks a lot for the build! I had pretty much every single item you used except the legs, thanks to my hoarding condition. And now I have an extra stash tab! Doing the conquests was really stressing me out. I started out trying to do the set dungeons, and on top of being challenging and taking hours sometimes, you have to farm sets on two chars (at least). I found doing this and the 50 million gold streak to be muuuch easier/quicker.
It was tough for me too, but I got it to work by avoiding direct fights with elites. Think my paper damage was 800k. I died a few times trying to fight elites but switched strategy and completed the GR45 with a couple minutes to spare.
I would seek out packs of basic mobs and the elites would chase me. The Area damage from earthquake and avalanche would weaken the elites over time (along with using furious charge to get the strongarm bracer bonus).
Luck is also involved. Ideally, you run into a blue elite pack early that doesnt have a dangerous modifier or you get a good early pylon. The bonus damage from bane of the powerful helps a good amount.
Edit: I used the Fire Walkers boots. All other items and abilities were the same as this build.
Thank you for the guide. I had pretty much everything that you recommended and was able to complete on my first go at it with 2m 45s remaining. So it wasn't a total cake walk even with pretty good rifts (no tunnels or mazes to contend) though I did die twice right at the very beginning because of unknown causes. While waiting for my death timer the second time I noticed there were suicide bombers buried in the large mob which I used Furious Charge to avoid. Before attempting the GR I first tried going out into the oasis to test the build with no legendary gems and it took me quite a long time to kill the first elite mob so I swapped gems from my main and gave it a shot. For those of you trying to build this, here are the details of my gear setup.
Paragon: 555
Legendary gem levels: 52 / 53 / 55
Ancient gear: Shoulders / Chest / Gavel (4285dps though I didn't roll a socket or use the gift so it was lacking 130 CHD) / Hellfire (Superstition) / Band of Might
Alteration: because I had not cubed my Unity I wore it and use COE in the cube
Sheet Stats:
Damage: 559k
Toughness: 15.4k
Recovery: 778k
Here are all the details of my spec for reference in case you want to compare.

One step closer to my extra stash tab which as you can tell I need it since I horde gear. Though I have to admit, because I horde gear I was able to quickly through this build together without having to farm any items. ;-) Anyway, thanks again to yaminator for providing this guide.
So this build only works if you have 3 Unity rings? One for you, your follower, and the cube? How is that not a waste of item slots? I'm asking because I have everything but the boots (and the ring in the cube) and I cannot get this to work. Not enough damage or survivability.
Just two Unity rings. One for you (wear it or cube it) and one for the follower.
If you have all 3 of the damage reducing items in the build and any life per fury spent on gear or just Bloodthirst, you'll be, if anything, too tough for GR45.
OK thanks. Will try it again once I've farmed another unity ring. I actually think I sharded one a few days ago! figures lol
I completed this yesterday on HC and this is my response to this guide that I used as base for my attempts. https://youtu.be/gxT-vI9AvRs
I do not want to create my own guide just for HC but there are a few pointers in there that might be good for fellow HC'ers out there.
Cheers and good luck all!

Managed to finish it today w/o some of the items though some of my gear disgustingly carried not having those items.
Obsidian Ring, as mentioned, is a good alternative if you don't want to use CoE or Unity.
Pretty good stuff!
Thank you for this!
Thank you for putting up your build! I had to swap a few items around since I didn't have them (like having Strongarm cubed and wearing BotFM, and same with the Gavel vs. the Blade), and I also didn't have a Vile Ward to equip so I just used some other random shoulders that happened to be Ancient (Fury of the Ancients - obviously no applicable equip bonus, but I just used it for the stats). For my jewelry cube item I used ORotZ since I haven't had a Unity drop yet.
Even with my substitutions, I also had little issue. My damage may not have been super awesome, but the survivability was still pretty good! So, again, thank you for the guidance!
