Closed 50th Grift Solo, using this build.
Armory: http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Dreadnor-2848/hero/41499512
The main change of the build from other roland's builds - there is no need in focus+restraint rings and also no need in using generator and Angel Hair belt. Using Unity+RoRG together with a Cindercoat provides way more surviveability in an exchange of not so great damage loss: more Shield Bash spam -> more Shield Glares -> more control ->better surviveability. Great build for those, who don't like "glassy" style of gameplay.
Pros: Surviveability, More control spam.
Cons: Less damage dealt.
Gear:
Head: Diamond, +Shield Bash dmg.
Amulet: I prefer Mara's Kaleidoscope, but any is suitable.
Belt: String of ears grant a nice melee damage reduice, but WH also goes well.
Boots: Str, Vit, AR, +Shield Bash dmg.
Weapon: Any antic, but ofc Furnace>Maximus/Blood Brother> Other.
Shield: Str+Shield Bash dmg+Crit Chance+Block/CDR
Gems:
Taeguk - stacks are easily obtained, so dmg+armor are often highly raised.
Bane - as usual.
Molten - main healing in this set.

Build Guide
Shield Bash spam provides cd reduice of defencive spells, so the mobs will be nearly in perma-blind(~80-90% of time). Laws of Valor(UF) - together with Cindercoat grants the ability to spam SB. Iron Skin - our defence. Akarat - more def+burst. Provoke+Shield Glare - wrath regen+control.
Except that, this is a rather typical Roland build in 2.2 patch.
Also, the gameplay of all rolands is in the spam of all abilities, so there was a good joke about that - "What would die first, a rift guardian or a keyboard?"
Upd #1: Shields Glare rune: ofc Zealous Glare.
Upd #2: As an alternative to Cindercoat, you can use Leoric Crown or illusory boots, or even 6Rolands+Unity+SoJ.
Upd #3: Tested The FInal Witness shield, it works nice with cindercoat and provides you a way more control, than a Piro Marella, because of the blind in all directions. Both shields can be used in this build.
Upd #4: Recorded the gameplay of the build with Unity+RoRG+The Final Witness at 47th Grift(~10:40min).
I got great gear but the glasscannon really sucks. So I'll try it this way. Great!
I pretty much use this exact build except I use Illusory Boots instead of a Cindercoat. I dont feel like I need the cost reduction from Cindercoat with glare up almost constantly and provoke in there as well. I like the benefit of being able to re-position over what Cindercoat offers. But Im also a console player so targeting enemies with bash is not an exact science and sometimes I charge into the middle of a pack, so if you dont have that problem then I suppose Cindercoat is the way to go.
edit: clarity
Sure, Illusory Boots can be used, as well as a Leoric Crown or other useful items. But cindercoat if more useful in boss fights and 20% fire damage on it - rather good bonus.
I used my Unity and RoRG with CHC/CHD on it, so CDR is not strictly necessary. Diamond in head+paragon+shoulders+glowes(optional) is enough usually.
quick question: why is your battle armory using the focus + restraint and generator? group play?
Haven't tested it yet, but I suppose it can be an alternative to taeguk/bane.
Ditto to what Dracco4heads said...using the build atm but would be nice to see some numbers over the screen on how it works with the set and the right gear...just hit lvl 70 a few hours ago

Done, uploaded the gameplay vid. =)
Hi DN92, thanks for your build. Liked it and went to 45 with it.
1. For hellfire ammy, which fifth passive u recommend for this build?
2. I like to use blood bro for the defensive, am I losing out a lot by not using furnace?
3. Does Final Witness make a big diff to survive in high gr? I use that and hv to keep constant eye on wrath. Was thinking of using Hallowed Bulwark for more dmg since ironskin is up a lot.
4. Also, for the 3rd gem, regen gem better than esoteoric alteration gem overall?

Thanks a lot for your nice build and Thanks in advance.
@Raskal77
You are welcome!
1. Holy Cause/Hold Your Ground. Or, if you have high block chance and low toughness - Divine Fortress or even Vigilante.
2. Not that much, there is not so great difference in them. Cause of slightly high attack speed and bonus, gained by Blood Brother, the overall damage is rather the same. Both, the Furnace and the Blood Brother(and Maximus too) are good for roland's crus, especially the ancient.
3. Yes, it helps a lot. Hallowed Bulwark is not that helpful - in higher grifts it doesnt matter you block 20k, or 40k, you try not to take dmg at all, cause all the mobs hit you for ~at 200k+. Imo, ofc.
4. Yes. I think, that resists can be gained by gems, to gain that 50k lps is much harder. Not enough healing without healing gem - is one of the problems of rolands crus.
Overall, you have a good gear and very good toughness on your crus, you can use str gems even instead of +res.
You are welcome! =)
Yes, life regen - is a core gem.
Don't really know about the hardcore, but you can use regen+resist+melee reduce gems all together, imo.
I started playing again a week ago and really like this build even through I'm still missing some items.
Been able to solo T6 and GR33 in my crap gear no problem.
did the +Block chance % on shields increase the damage from shield bash?
@Manel171
Yes.
i'm playing on hc, so it's not worth lose vit on shield... so it's better str+vit+crit+SB% or str+vit+crit+Block%?
@Nisseonbeer.
Currently in this build - it is not so diffucult. Yes, its not 100% uptime, but stucks are very easily gained.
But if you ask, I would choose Esoteric Alteration as as alternative to Taeguc. But prepare fo less damage dealt. =)
@LycheeMartini
FInal Witness in your case, I think.
Level gems to 45+, better RoRG(with CC/CHD instead of Vit), better bracers (180+ single dmg), better neck, helm with both crit and +sb dmg, boots with AR+sb dmg,
P.S. Laws of Valor - Unstopable Force.
@saska1600
Bracers, weapon, no block/sb dmg/both on shield, no +sb dmg on helm. Also, u need fire dmg on neck and bracers, not phys.
Check my gear -

Why use fire shield bash instead of the last shield bash rune that makes it do double damage? All the +fire damage items on wasted is silly when you could get +100% by using that rune instead. Is it just the cost reduction from cindercoat? Surely we could just find a good way to manage the cost.
Can you replace any of these skills with the sweep attack since it gives a 500% damage bonus on the 4th piece of the rolands set. If so, which one would be the best to switch out for sweep attack?
