Game is causing computer to shut down

  • I think the title sums up my problem pretty succinctly. To elaborate though, every time I try to play the game it causes my computer to shut down instantly after a few minutes of gameplay. There is no error message or blue screen of death; it just shuts down. Recently though, it's been shutting down once I get to a certain point.

The part is when I get to the 'Master Soul Crucible' in 'Nobels' Rest Courtyard.' This wouldn't be as annoying if I didn't have to go though Briarthorn Graveyard every time it happened. If only there were more checkpoints...but I digress.

Anyway, please offer any assistance you have. Thank you!
  • Sometimes overheating can cause a computer to hard reset or just shut down with no errors. Have you checked inside your case recently?

  • Tommy,

Can you post some information about your computer? You can find this information in the Direct X Diagnostic Tool:

    Click on Start
    Click on Run
Type in: dxdiag (In Vista, type dxdiag in the search field)
    Hit Enter or OK

Click on the Save All Information button at the bottom, and create a dxdiag text file, and copy and paste it ALL here.

Could you also post your D3Prefs.txt file? It's located in the My Documents\Diablo III folder.

  • Tommy,

You're running an older video card I see. If it hasn't been cleaned recently, it could just be full of dust keeping the cooling from working properly on it. If that's not the problem though, I'd suggest manually lowering the Hardware Class value being used by the game. You're currently at 5, try going down to 2 and see if the symptom is still there afterwards.

    With the game closed, change

    HardwareClass "5"

    to

    HardwareClass "2"

    in your D3Prefs.txt file

  • Guilherme,

The game has no mechanism for shutting down a computer. Rebooting as you describe could be due to several things, most notably an overheating condition, and also a poor power source, either external or the PSU inside the computer.

If you post your dxdiag info I can see if maybe something sticks out that might be related.

  • Hey everyone!

This is a very old thread! To avoid confusion I will be locking the thread.

Along with the steps that Boubou listed, I would highly recommend making sure your drivers and operating system is completely up to date: https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/200576
